I teach English and last week I stumbled upon a poor, abandoned left-behind pen in the classroom. I picked it up without much thought - I am a collector of abandoned pens - only to discover the ideal writing tool. The Sharpie pen is a nice fine-point pen that's perfect for writing notes, grading papers or anything else that requires a clean, precise and fluid line. I rarely write Amazon reviews but I'm notoriously picky about my pens. I may pick up any and all that I find, but I continue to use only a prized few. Right now I'm thanking whatever fool orphaned his or her Sharpie--that person's loss is my writing nirvana.

Having worked with many varieties of pens and markers in design school I was hesitant to purchase these because I couldn't believe they wouldn't bleed through. I took a chance, though, because I have a hard time finding pens that don't require heavy pressure to transfer ink to the page. (And gel pens tend to smear.) Low and behold, these little devils perform exactly as advertised! Ink transfer is smooth, consistent, and immediate ie doesn't require heavy pressure of pen to page. I dinged them one star because I wish the barrel was a little larger to make writing even more comfortable. (That being said the barrel is bigger than most regular pens...the ubiquitous bic stic, for example, is smaller in diameter than this Sharpie pen.)

In reaction to the reviewer who complained that the pen didn't write on CD cases and the ink wasn't smear-proof, this is not a permanent marker. Although the Sharpie brand is synonymous with permanent markers, this is "the first Sharpie PEN." It says so right on the packaging. Also on the packaging, Sharpie claims "smear resistant when dry" and I have found this to be true. The pen does tend toward a marker in several ways. First, the ink is dry (on non-coated paper) immediately after being laid down and will not smear. (Lefties rejoice!) Second, if you leave the tip pressed to on spot on the page for a few seconds the ink dot will start to grow and eventually bleed through a page. But when I am writing (as with a pen) I never stop and think with my pen tip pressed to the page, so this doesn't worry me. And last, marks are clean and clear without the skipping, light spots and/or ink gobs of traditional pens.

I'm a fan.

PS Sharpie markets this as a "fine point" and for a marker pen, it undoubtedly is. Those who haven't tried it should note that the Sharpie pen produces a wider line than a fine pointed ink pen.

One bright sunny day last August, I happened to come across a set of four blue Sharpie Fine Point Pens at Wal-Mart, and tossed them into my basket. Within two weeks, I was a full believer in these pens, and when I saw this set of 6 on Amazon.com a few months later, I just had to have it!

These pens dispense ink at just the right rate. They practically glide across the page, never blotting or smudging. This is invaluable to me as a college student. I use them to scribble notes hurriedly during lecture; to brainstorm ideas for essays; and for pretty much everything else! And as a nerdy college student, I love having six different colors to work with when I rewrite my notes after class.

I highly recommend the Sharpie Fine Point Pen - to anyone and everyone!
