These are decent permanent markers, and they do indeed write on a variety of surfaces. However, in contrast to the previous reviewer, I found that they're definitely not alcohol-resistant (despite the claim on the label that they're "chemical resistant"). I work in a lab where we frequently sterilize equipment with 70% ethanol, so an alcohol-resistant marker is very important for samples/supplies we want to keep labeled! I tested this Sharpie Industrial, a standard Sharpie, and one of our standard lab markers (house brand from a scientific supply company). BOTH Sharpies dissolved immediately in 70% ethanol, but the real lab marker wasn't affected at all.

So for general permanent marking, these markers work fine, but if you work in a lab setting (or want to label your whiskey glasses?) I'd look elsewhere.

Have owned one of these pens for a couple of years now. I always turn to it when I want to mark something with extra-large permanent lettering and it never let me down. Ink flow has been consistent, seems to stick to any surface, and to withstand exposure to a variety of environments. This is of note: the ink in this particular Sharpie black marker contains cresol and xylene, and one or the other of them will slowly bleed into any surface that contains latex. Weird, but here's the story:

I wanted to use a black ink pen to outline some sails on some miniature boats I was making. I first did this with one of the smaller black sharpie pens, and got the effect I was looking for: a black line around the edge of the sail. The sails are made of regular cotton cloth soaked in a clear latex "glaze" to prevent fraying. When I tried this again several days later on a different boat, the outcome initially seemed identical: a crisp black edge. However, over the next several days the edges of the sails on the second boat began bleeding into the rest of the sail.

THIS WAS A GOOD THING. The slowly-penetrating ink made the edges of the sails look weathered, antiqued, and this was highly desirable but totally unexpected and did not happen with the smaller Sharpie pens (whose ink never bled, never antiqued my sails). The only chemical difference in pens is the presence of cresol and xylene, and one or the other of them allows this kind of pen's ink to continue to flow into a latex-painted surface for weeks after application. This process is sped up by warmth.

Purchased these markers for marking lab tubes for blood and specimen containers. I needed these "industrial" markers because the ink from same-brand, simple "permanent" markers would bleed when not given enough time to dry and were exposed to liquid. These "industrial" markers are minimally more expensive than the same brand "permanent" markers, yet far superior in durability of ink. Regular permanent ink is soluble in non-polar liquid (acetone) even when dry, and requires a measurable dry time to set before being insoluble with water. Draw width is only slightly wider than a ball point pen. These markers are perfect for any application requiring solid, fast professional marking where truly permanent ink is invaluable.

I bought the Sharpie Pro King Size for labeling boxes, equipment and crossing out shipping labels. I believe this Sharpie is the most versatile Sharpie when compared to the Pro Chisel and the Pro Magnum. You can write fine and thick with this marker on all surfaces.

The King Size is a little bigger than your standard sized marker. It has a plastic top and an aluminum body which adds to the durability of the marker. If you were to step on this marker you may dent it but you won’t likely break it like you would a plastic version. The only downfall is that the aluminum will get colder than the plastic if using in cold temperatures and it may get more slippery when wet or oily but that is just my thoughts on it as the finish is very smooth when dry. What I like is that if you were using this outside and dropped it you could easily see it because it is shiny.

Because of how the Sharpie Pro King Size is designed you can stand it up on its end as it has a flat bottom. You can also write as thick as 1/4 of an inch or as thin as 1/16 of an inch if you are precise. The Pro King Size chisel tip looks like a standard felt tip marker unlike the Pro chisel tip that has a more refined and precise chisel tip. The ink is nice and dark. It covers up text and anything else well. I did have issues getting the ink to write on wet items but it did work best on wet porous materials than wet non-porous and wipe off any excess water on the item you wish to mark for best results. The ink dries quickly both on dry and wet applications. I even tried rubbing the ink off of glass and plastic and it holds up well to abuse.

The Sharpie Pro King Size is my favorite sized chisel tip marker.

It behaves mostly like a normal black Sharpie marker. Writing is legible, and the tip size is small enough for fine writing.

I've found that 70% ethanol degrades the readability and durability of the ink. It seems to completely dissolve and wash away in 100% organic solvents, 100% ethanol, and 100% methanol (see image). It DOES, however, stand up better to 70% ethanol than normal Sharpie ink - the latter substantially dissolves and smudges, while the super permanent ink loses a layer and fades, but doesn't smudge unless you rub it. In my opinion, these properties fall somewhat short of the claims "super permanent" and "specially formulated for industrial, laboratory, and commercial use," since those claims made me expect it to be more durable.

* EDIT: Was going to submit an image of plastic tubes with unsprayed labels, sprayed with 70% ethanol (faded but not smeared), and 100% ethanol (completely gone), but that option doesn't exist anymore.
