4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable! December 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Shattered by Kate Kelly is a novel that hit the e-book stands on September this year. A romantic suspense that features a stalker killer and a past from which both the hero and heroine are trying to find their way out of, Shattered was a novel that I enjoyed reading.

When 27 year old Tess MacLean makes her way back to South Dakota after a 3 year period, its not at all how she has envisioned a return trip home back to everything familiar would be. With a killer close to her heels, Tess runs to the only person that she can count on, her ex-fiance Jay Rawlings who made it painfully clear to her during their last encounter that she was no longer needed in his life.

Jay is a man who kids himself into believing that all is right in his world by pushing away that nightmarish night from 3 years ago when everything in his professional and personal life turned upside down. Refusing to give anything a second chance to shatter his world once again, Jay believes that keeping people that he cares about at arms length is the way to live. However, once again when Tess tumbles into his life, needing him more than ever, there is little he can do to say no and turn her away.

Rusty skills that Jay has not used for far too long help him uncover the clues as to why Tess's life might be in danger, the clues opening up a whole lot of mess that seems far more serious than he had believed at first. And to say that Tess once again opens up old wounds that has far from healed is an understatement.

Jay and Tess's love had been a fiery and all consuming one before their future had vaporised right in front of them. And once again, those old feelings hit Jay with full force until he has no choice but to give in and experience that heady magic that had once been his life until he had pushed away the one woman who means everything to him.

A killer who is far too close to home than either Tess or Jay envisions stalks them both, biding his time until towards the very end where Jay has to confront his past demons once again to find closure from the nightmares that have been a constant presence in his life for far too long.

I loved Tess's character far more than I loved Jay. Maybe it had something to do with that inner courage within Tess that refuses to give up or maybe because she is the straightforward type of heroine that I love so much. For me, Jay was a trifle bit too caught up in the past, maybe rightfully so at first, but there were times when I wanted to poke him in the chest and point towards Tess and their happily ever after. But in the end, Kelly managed to deliver an ending that fits, her writing style which is what made the story work for me at all times.

Shattered is a story of second chances blended well with suspense elements that guarantees an enjoyable read. Recommended for fans of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, fast read November 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I finished Shattered about a week ago and am still thinking about it. It was that good. The struggles between Jay and Tess. They had loads of reasons to stay away from each other, but Ms Kelly deftly shows us the reasons why they can't stay away from each other. The suspense part of this story had me trying to guess the bad guy from the start, and with loads of twists, I had a great deal of fun, and no, I didn't get it right. This writer knows how to tell a tale.
I loved the way she plucks the reader and plops her down in the middle of this imaginary world and has her so involved with Jay and Tess' lives. Good job! Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so much December 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A mere 2-stars for me. The story sounded great and the reviews that I read were promising, but Shattered simply didn't do it for me. Jay is a former detective who questions his courage and response in a life-altering situation involving his sister; something that occurred 3-years ago. Tess is the woman he loved, but whom he drove away in the aftermath of that tragedy. Tess goes off to the other side of South Dakota while Jay becomes essentially a recluse on the ranch he works with his father, Tom. Fast forward to current day and in circumstances that seem beyond remotely plausible, Tess ends up as a pawn in avenging the situation from 3-years ago. Who does she reach out to for help? The man who drove her away. Of course.

Their romance didn't engage me. Issues for me include repeated references to Tess' strength and ability to be a partner to Jay which seems very much at odds with her landing at his ranch in the first place and contributing little more than good dinners once she arrives. A bigger issue is the idea that in the middle of what is a major mess in her life Tess and Jay "need to get away for a few hours". Really? If someone was after me will ill intent, I don't think that I'd ponder a brief trip to take my mind off of it. I think that every brain cell would be solely focused on catching the bad guys. And then there's the way that Jay talks to her from time to time which borders on condescending. While I like the alpha male concept, let's have some respect for the woman you're supposed to be all twisty about. Being frustrated because your investigation has hit a roadblock doesn't entitle you to talk down to your 'partner'. Finally (and I can't say much about this without giving something away) murders are typically big news and media outlets tend to pick up on those stories and include pictures of the perpetrators. If you've read the book, you'll know where I'm headed.

To end my thoughts on a high note, the author did keep me guessing about who the bad guy was. I went back and forth between the two most likely culprits and while I ultimately got it right, the twists and turns kept me guessing. I just wish that Shattered had more in the plus column.
