From Booklist

Despite the destruction Katrina inflicted, New Orleans remains a city of old, deep mysteries and superstition. Trinity moves back to the place of her birth to live with her cool, artistic aunt. A few unexpected things occur: she meets the handsome and athletic Chase, starts having visions of future events, and discovers secrets about her mother. Then a classmate goes missing. Can the magic of New Orleans and her mother’s lingering legacy guide her visions to help the missing girl, or will it drive Trinity to madness? Trinity is the poster child for hard knocks, but her painful past—and her ability to see future events—makes her stronger. Submerged in New Orleans legend and charm, this novel quickly becomes addicting; readers won’t be able to stop until all the riddles are finally solved. Not for the fainthearted, though; be prepared for a shocking, terrifying, and thrilling ride. Grades 9-12. --Bethany Fort

“James crafts a sexy, suspenseful paranormal thriller.”—Kirkus Reviews

"Ellie James has created a haunting, mystical page-turner of deceit, betrayal and magic with Shattered Dreams. Trinity receives a bit too much “new kid” attention upon her return to a recovering post-Katrina New Orleans when her psychic visions link her to a missing classmate (who just happens to be the recent ex of the new guy in her life). Trinity soon realizes her unusual gifts may do more than help find a kidnapped cheerleader – they may reveal secrets about her past as well."--Kimberly Smith, Cool Kids Read

“The first novel in The Midnight Dragonfly series takes flight with a powerful mix of mystery, magic, and romance. SHATTERED DREAMS is an entrancing debut brimming with all the things that make New Orleans unforgettable!”--Shannon Delany, author of the 13 to Life series

“A cruel prank, a mysterious psychic gift and the ghostly streets of New Orleans set the stage for Ellie James’ hauntingly readable SHATTERED DREAMS. A word to the wise -- this tale of love, betrayal, and stalking evil is best read with the lights on.”–– Jana Oliver, author of The Demon Trapper’s Daughter

"Well-written and filled with both dramatic and romantic tension, SHATTERED DREAMS is an exciting debut you won't want to miss."--Jenna Black, author of Glimmerglass and Shadowspell

“With SHATTERED DREAMS Ellie James delivers all the goods—in very high style.  Set in post-Katrina New Orleans, SHATTERED DREAMS takes readers on a rollercoaster ride of thrills and chills while exploring the deepest recesses of friendship, family and love.  The romantic relationship between Trinity and Chase brings to life the unyielding power of young love.  In addition, James captures the sultry atmosphere of New Orleans with such skill that you’ll hear the blues echoing from the French Quarter, feel the sweltering heat rising from the wet cobblestone streets and smell the dank earthiness of the river.”--New York Times bestselling author Linda Castillo

“A haunting and engaging story with characters who will stay with you long after you finish the book. Ellie James is a debut author you won’t want to miss.” -CC Hunter, author of Born at Midnight
“Mesmerizing! With Shattered Dreams, Ellie James has woven unforgettable characters and dark elements into the richness of New Orleans to create a beautifully haunting tale that will stay with the reader long after she turns the final page.” –Rachel Hawthorne, author of the Dark Guardian series

More About the Author

Most people who know me think I'm your nice, ordinary average wife and mom of two young kids. They see someone who does all that ordinary stuff, like grocery shopping, walking the dog, going to baseball games, and somehow always forgetting to get the house cleaned and laundry done.

What they don't know is that more often than, I am somewhere far, far away, in an extraordinary world, deeply embroiled in solving a riddle or puzzle or crime, testing the limits of possibility, exploring the unexplained, and holding my breath while two people fall in love.

Those who do know have learned to go easy on me. They know what my blank stare means, and they know when I politely nod, I haven't heard a word. I even have a few awesome friends who know to call me with gentle reminders about things like the first day of school and neighborhood block parties!

Regardless of which world I'm in, my story worlds or the real world, I love rain and wind and thunder and lightning, the first warm kiss of spring and the first cool whisper of fall, family, friends, and animals, dreams, happy endings, and...chocolate chip cookies.

I couldn't put down this novel. I was expecting and received a good bathtub read, but I was surprised to discover more than just that. Ellie James cleverly incorporates traditional gothic elements into post-Katrina New Orleans, making the story grippingly dark and suspenseful - it was embarrassing that I was still reading at 2 AM.

True to the gothic roots of the story and as other reviewers have said, there were twists and turns galore. My favorite bit of the story was when the heroine found herself alone at night on Bourbon Street. I was really worried about her! James successfully took the gothic story treatment to the next level by making a crowded bar as scary as a secret room in a dark, deserted mansion!

Three cheers for twists, turns and confusion! Looking forward to the 2nd and 3rd installments!

SHATTERED DREAMS is the first book in the Midnight Dragonfly series, and launches Ellie James as a Young Adult fiction writer with a powerful, compelling, and original style that combines a paranormal thriller with a young, mysterious woman's coming of age awakening.

The character of Trinity Monsour is multi-dimensional, vibrant, natural, and endearing. Through her perspective we have a window into her very soul and the emotional scars she has tried to keep hidden. We join her as she seeks answers about herself and the terrifying, nightmarish visions she cannot escape. The beautiful clarity of Trinity's voice not only engages the reader but resonates as our thoughts and emotions are pulled into her past and present. Here is an early passage that I particularly loved for the innocent simplicity yet powerful depth of 16-year old Trinity.

"All my life I'd wondered. I'd dreamed. A picture, that's all I wanted. A story, a piece of jewelry, a memory. Anything. Something to connect me to them, my parents. Something to make them real. But nothing prepared me for the faded image."

Put simply, this passage opens the door for the reader to join hands with Trinity as she begins an often frightening journey to understand 'who' she is and desperately seek answers to a mysterious past that others have tried to keep from her.

As a writer, Ellie James has an unforgettable voice with an artist's finesse for applying visual narrative that places the reader into a vivid New Orleans setting. At the same time, Ms. James creates the perfect authentic tone and texture to her YA characters, while also deftly using large brush strokes with bold, often dark technique, to propel a thrilling, haunting, and suspenseful plot.

I absolutely loved this book, and strongly recommend SHATTERED DREAMS. I can't wait to read the next novel in the Midnight Dragonfly series by Ellie James.

Trinity Monsour is sixteen years old when she moves to New Orleans to live with her Aunt Sarah. Her grandmother had died, and since her parents had died when she was two, Aunt Sarah was her only remaining relative. But from growing up in a cabin in the mountains and being homeschooled doesn't prepare her for the big city and high school.

She wants to fit in, so when a group of teenagers ask Trinity to accompany them one evening to a supposedly haunted house, she agrees. When Trinity arrives though, she feels that something is wrong and that they shouldn't go in. But she doesn't want to be a freak to her possible newfound friends, so she enters the building. They ensue into a game of Truth or Dare that ends with a prank being played on Trinity, but during the prank, Trinity has a horrible vision of a young girl bleeding while lying on a mattress. Trinity is freaked out, scared and madder than a hornet at Jessica, the girl who initiated the prank of locking Trinity in the dark.

Afterword, Trinity tries to let bygones be bygones, but Jessica's boyfriend Chase confronts Trinity with an apology and to explain that he and Jessica had broken up. Chase is interested in Trinity. Trinity wants to believe in Chase but she's scared. Especially with the visions that keep coming to her in her dreams. When Jessica doesn't come home the next day, all sorts of rumors abound, namely that Trinity was seeking revenge and murdered Jessica.

Trinity knows she didn't do it, but shares her dreams with the police. The more she dreams, the more clues they receive, but the clues start to make Trinity look guilty. Furthermore, she's been learning more about where she came from and her gift. She's afraid that if Chase finds out she's a freak; he won't want to be with her anymore.

This is a book perfectly suited to the YA paranormal genre. Adult readers of YA fiction will like it, too, I think. Beautiful, more sophisticated teens, a mysterious venture into the strange, and a new, beautiful girl in an otherwise staid high school environment. The stage is set when the teens encounter a horrifically complex spirit in an old Garden District house.

YAs will just faint over the book cover art. This is the primary "draw" of this genre fiction these days. Once they get inside the cover, then the real proof is in the pudding, as one says, but getting there means a beautiful cover to begin with. It's also important to be a series, and I think this one is leading that way. My assessment is that it's a worthy one.

I liked the book. The characters are charming, and I found this a book well-written. The author knows how to entertain and engage. The location is especially appealing to me as an adult reader and reviewer of YA fiction who cut my teeth on Anne Rice vampires and witches!

I rate this book a 5 gossamer dragonfly wings
