Book Description

Thank you for making my first book, Shattered Dreams, a New York Times best-seller. In it, I told the story of my plural marriage to Fundamentalist Mormon, Verlan LeBaron. As the second of ten wives, I bore him thirteen children so that he could become a god of a future planet and guarantee my eternal life. But instead of salvation, I felt the damnation of alienation, poverty, abuse, and a broken heart. I watched as twenty-eight family members and friends, who dared to oppose my brother-in-law “Evil Ervil,” were murdered in cold blood. The book ended when Verlan was killed in a tragic car collision—and I was left alone, with seven children to raise.

In this book, I’ll honestly answer the many questions people have asked after reading my memoirs. I’ll fill in many of the details from my early life. And I’ll bring you up to date with the many ways my life has changed. Where there was abuse, I have been wonderfully healed. Where there was hunger, I have been richly fed. Where there was a desperate longing for love, I have been blessed with unconditional love. And where there were shattered dreams, they have been restored!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, colorful story written by a wonderful lady. January 14, 2014

Irene, thank you for sharing your incredible story with the world! I could hardly put your book down, and now that I'm finished, I'm still in a daze. You are truly a survivor and a very strong, courageous, and gifted woman. I love you and appreciate you more than words can say. Praise God that you found Him and that He's become your strength and your song! May He continue to shelter and sustain you in the days ahead. With appreciation always, Susan Ray Schmidt

Irene Spencers books take me back into her memories where I can imagine what her life was like. I laughed and cried while reading her recount of a polygamist wife's encounters. Shattered Dreams Restored goes into more detail of her life from beginning to present with an uplifting and humorous attitude that make her seem as though she could make it through anything. Shattered Dreams was given to me about a year ago. I didn't put the book down for about a week until it was finished. I was so amazed by the storys I would reread the best parts to my husband. While sitting at the table reading one evening I became so enveloped in the book I hadn't realised my husband had already came home from work and was waiting on his dinner. I told him what I had been reading that had taken up most of my time for the day. He made me laugh so hard by saying if I didn't cook his dinner he was going to marry another wife so I could read and she could cook!

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful love story October 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a story of redemption, healing, and 2 wonderful people finding each other. The one thing I did not like and was disturbed by, is that one of the Colonia LeBaron community members is exposed as a pedophile - and it appears that both the writer and other relatives continued to allow this person to be around children frequently. If you have the knowledge that someone is abusing children - do NOT let the sun go down on another day they can harm a child while you 'think about it'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but bad editing April 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked the book and enjoyed learning more about Irene Spencer, but while I would give the book itself a five star what made me give it three was the way that the print was in the book. There were times when there was only a couple words on one line or at the beginning of a chapter the first letter of the chapter would be on one line and the rest of the sentence would be on the second line. It was annoying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such a great story teller. January 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Irene is the best story teller. Both her other books, I read in a day. I didn't like this book as well as "Shattered Dreams", but maybe because I already knew how the story ends. I did enjoy getting to know a bit about her children and a few more of the details after her first husband died. The women who leave polygamy, bravely tell their story, as most of the time it means they will be cut-off from their family, remaining in the cult. It truly is a mind game and the brain washing is thorough as Irene details throughout this book. Here, she can really see the cult programming that she went through and the influence it had, even after she left the practice. Polygamy is sad and it's no good for anyone, except those pulling the strings of the lives of others. Irene, just keep telling your story. The more these abuses are brought to light, the less influence they will have. My prayer is that the authorities will one day step in to protect the women and children of these marriages and not hide behind "freedom of religion" excuses. Maybe it's no a "must read", but I wouldn't have missed it.

After reading Shattered Dreams I couldn't wait for the rest of the story and then it came -- Shattered Dreams: Restored! I devoured it and it left me with such a feeling of strength, love, peace and hope!! Irene Spencer is a wonderful story teller, easy to follow, develops the story so well you feel you are walking with her through her life, and an example of a strong woman willing to change her life often, each time for the better, staying close to God, and being a wonderful example to all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren -- as well as for those of us who read her stories. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book!!!! January 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Even after reading all of Irene's other books, this one held me mesmerized!!! I couldn't put it down!!! I read Shattered Dreams twice and did not think that it could be topped!! As I shared it with all whom I knew read! However, reading the "life after" story, has really brought Irene's story to a more complete level!! I am very proud that she chose not to remain silent about very sensitive subjects, and has gained even more respect from me! My most favorite part of the book however, was the telling of her loving relationship with her husband Hector!! I spent hours crying as I mourned with her during all of her losses! I feel as if she is a friend, and I am so thankful, that although we may never meet this side of heaven, when I get there after serving The Lord Jesus, I will be able to sit with them personally and tell them what a wonderful example and soul they are and were!! I highly recommend this book to everyone... It is a beautiful love story between people, and people and their God!!

More About the Author

Irene Spencer came from five generations of polygamy. As the second of ten wives, she was the mother of 14 of her husband's 58 children. During her twenty-eight years in a polygamous marriage, Irene gave birth to thirteen children (all single births). Her ninth child was adopted as a newborn daughter. Irene and Hector J. Spencer, her faithful husband of twenty-two years, travel spreading their love between all of their children and loved ones. Irene has 127 grandchildren and 121 great-grandchildren . . . AND . . . there are more great-grandchildren on the way. Irene tells people she doesn't have a family tree, she has a family forest!
