crime-scene specialist maris middleton and her lover, fbi agent lauren o' connor are investigating the brutal murders of three young women, not knowing that a shadow of their past case is about to reappear again. the evidence points fast to the slightly retarded boy in town, but through maris' labwork it turns out, that there must be someone else behind the murders. this was the first maris middleton mystery i read. it was exciting, ofcourse i want to know whodidit. but the characters are too stereotype ( maris is butchy and she's drinking a lot, Chief Kenedy is too weak... ) and after the strong build-up of the first chapters the story gets weaker. it seems, that there is almost no lesbian mystery without something bad that happened in the past of the heroine or the heroine's lover or, in this case, the lover's sister. the author, kaye davis is a professional criminalist, who describes exactly her method of work. The descriptions of the murder scene and an anonymously send rape video sound grisly realistic whereas some lab scenes are too detailed. overall ok, but not exactly my favorite.
