Shattered Palms is a great read with a bonus!
Of course we get to enjoy the sexy love/ detective crime story that we've come to expect from the Lei Crime Series, but this time we are also taken on a guided tour of the exotic cloud forest of Maui, with its remarkable collection of endangered song birds.
Toby Neal always manages to give us a little something extra.....introduction to a unique locale or a tantalizing side trip into anthropology or ecology or biology or psychology or.....the list goes on.
Personally, I think this reveals the natural teacher in our author. She has so many interests, so much intellectual curiosity, and she cannot help but share these things in which she so delights, with us. We readers end up being the lucky beneficiaries of her intellectual generosity!
In Shattered Palms we are drawn into tropical ornithology in such a natural and endearing way as to make us all feel that we are walking along side Lei, through the natural habitat of the kiwikiu and the 'i'iwi.

To enrich your enjoyment of Shattered Palms, may I suggest that you visit the website of Toby's husband, Mike Neal. Mike is, among his many talents, a gifted nature photographer, and his photographs of Hawaii's native birds helped this mainlander do more than imagine the species that featured so prominently in Shattered Palms. Mike's beautiful photographs can be found under "Hawaiian native birds" in the Photo Galleries menu at Nealstudios.
For those who enjoy a good mystery, served up with the added enjoyment of learning something new, Toby Neal never disappoints. Thank you Toby and Mike!

If you are a crime novel lover, then you will enjoy this series. In addition to the usual elements, there is a love story subplot that tugs at your heartstrings. The vivid descriptions of Hawaiian landscape and birds in this novel paint a truly beautiful picture.

But wait... you didn't really think it would be that simple, did you? Whenever Lei Texeira, the endearingly flawed heroine of Toby Neal's "Lei Crime Series," is involved, nothing is ever that simple.

In typical Texeira fashion, Lei is anything but "by the book," in her crime-solving or in her personal life. If chasing a bad guy means that she might not make it to her wedding on time... well, everyone will just have to understand, including the groom.

I love Toby Neal's storytelling, especially in this series, because she always addresses issues related to her beloved native Hawaii. In this book, it's the exotic and beautiful birds that inhabit the higher elevations of Haleakala, Maui's inactive volcano. Someone is poaching these lovely, endangered creatures, and someone is trying to save them. But how are the two connected?

Will Lei and Stevens make it to the altar? And is someone trying to prevent their "happily ever after?" This book will have your pulse quickening at every page turn, as Lei races to find the clues in time.

Saying I hate mysteries might be a little strong, but I'm definitely not someone who seeks out these titles or films. It's just not my genre. But I read all of Neal's titles for the sheer fact that they read more like travel guides with a who-dunnit thrown in than your average, formulaic mystery thriller.

In this recent installment, Neal includes not only the envy-sparking depictions of some of the more beautiful and breathtaking aspects of wild Hawaii (in painstaking detail that only someone who has experienced it firsthand can pull off), but also incorporates a social theme of hunting and poaching on protected land.

I especially like her main character in this series, a no-nonsense woman who doesn't feel the threat to her feminism that causes her to behave in an "in your face" way that so many writers resort to. She's just a female, that's all there is to it. She's fully capable at her job and well-regarded, and I appreciate that. Books in which the woman constantly has to prove herself really are a disservice to women.

This book may be the best of the Lei Crime Series. From the very first chapter the author captured my imagination by the way she painted a picture of the cloud forest wildlife and vegetation.I felt like was there during the chase and tracking episodes. AS I have been following Lei as she deals with her personal struggles, due to her childhood trauma, she has grown stronger and stronger until now she is willing to share her life with someone other than her dog, which is a very big step for her to take. In addition, along with Lei's personal growth, there are two very clear examples of human greed and selfishness, seen in the poaching of rare birds and also, the self-centered actions of two individuals whose desire to succeed is more important than respect for human life. I highly recommend this book for reading, as well as all of the authors other books, regardless of your personal value system. Thank you Toby, it is a great one and I can't wait for the next one.

Its not a bad book- easy read. Its not a lot of real detailed murder criminal stuff but a lot about Hawaii and detailed. The characters are likeable and at some points its a combo romance and murder. I have read most of the series of this Lei Crime series and they're not bad. I purchase them inexpensive and feel that they are worth the low cost- but I would not pay a lot of money for this author. But then again there are very few authors that I will. It was interesting enough to want to go and read other books in this series. The cheap amazon books allow me to explore readers that I would normally not read.
