Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Glass's scholarly, impassioned study plunges readers into a world of ongoing torment, suffering, alienation, terror and distortion--the lives of women with multiple personality disorder (MPD), whom he interviewed at a Maryland psychiatric hospital. All of his subjects develop alter-selves as protection from the horrors of childhood incest or other physical and mental abuse. One woman had participated in satanic cult rites and was repeatedly raped by her father, who was the cult's high priest. The patients' compelling narratives are interwoven with Glass's complex critique of postmodernist thinkers like Jean Baudrillard and Jean-Francois Lyotard, who reject psychoanalysis and celebrate a self without boundaries. Glass ( Private Terror/Public Life ) charges that the postmodernists' nihilistic view of the self as a purely social construct dangerously neglects people's inner realities and their propensity for painful fragmentation. His feminist discourse analyzes MPD as the consequence of male abuse of power in a patriarchal society.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly helpful for those with MPD, July 31, 2006

In order to truly get something from the book, you have to be up on postmodernism. If you are someone with MPD, I suggest you search "postmodernism" at Wikipedia before deciding whether this book might be worth your time. I did read the book, and as my review title states, I found it to be only mildly helpful, but I found several interesting books in the Reference section for further reading.

If you are, on the other hand, well-versed in postmodernism, and that is your main interest (rather than MPD), this might prove to be an interesting read.

1.0 out of 5 stars confusing, April 2, 2000

I thought this book was very confusing. I have did (mpd) and got this book hoping to find a place for more information on this disorder. I was very dissapointed. The book focused not on mpd but on political issues and described more about postmodernism than it did about multiple personality disorder.
