Review

No guide can complete the healing pilgrimage for another, but Pat, Sue, and Vicki lovingly and capably tend the fire that lights the way. Their clear guidance is respectful and comforting. They understand suffering, and they know what it is to be gripped by fear. They offer hope, not because they are optimists, but because they have seen and experienced all that is possible. Each chapter is a further affirmation that the darkness and anguish of abuse are not a match for the inner light. --Paula D'Arcy, Author of Gift of the Red Bird

After abuse, the question becomes, How do we heal? This volume will be of great value to those who have suffered abuse of any kind and are seeking recovery. Shattered Soul? is rich with well-documented factual information about abuse, its effects, and the way people can be healed and restored to a full and happy life. The healthy spirituality expressed by the authors, the page-turning story-telling, and the meditations and exercises to encourage deep inner work will significantly benefit victims of abuse. I highly recommend, Shattered Soul? as a priceless aid to the healing journey for those who have suffered abuse and those who walk with them. --Lyn Doucet, Co-author of When Women Pray

Shattered Soul? sets out to offer sensitive and healing guidance for the victims of abuse and trauma along the pathways of courage, anger, grief, forgiveness and transformation to the restoration of a healthy sense of personal value and relationship with God. But this is a book of relevance and importance also for others whose capacity to trust in God and grow spiritually has been impaired. The personal testimonies of the five soul friends are shocking in the enormity of their suffering but they are also an inspiration to transcend the pain and find meaning and purpose in wounds. And who amongst us is not wounded? If not by major abuse, then perhaps by the lesser but persistent everyday pinpricks of a seemingly hostile world? In such a world, the reader is reminded, soul-mates are invaluable. Way Stations wayside shrines along the path to soul recovery prompt us to pray, and walking meditations point the way to coming to terms with our injury and ultimately finding the spiritual gifts that can be born of it. Shattered Soul? is a salutary reminder that the pathways of comfort and healing remain open to us all. --Kathryn Spink, Author of Mother Teresa: An Authorized Biography

This is an awesome book. This is a well thought out and written book. I love the way it is organized with lovely activities and interaction. So far it has been a warm, loving, and gentle. I am actually looking forward to navagating this journey. It seems like a well balanced blend of information, personal stories, and guidance. I like that it has spiritual references without feeling religous. Again it has been a great book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Barbara J. Fuhrwerk on January 25, 2012
Format: Paperback
So many books of the self-help variety tend to either be quick fixes or smear icing over a very deep wound. This very insightful book clearly elicits the hurt and long-lasting effects of one who is a victim. However, it is unique in spelling out distinct paths one must walk to become whole again. It is a timeless recipe for healing the soul and would be an effective tool in the hands of any teacher or counselor. The most significant sections of each chapter are the "Way Stations". What person on a spiritual journey could not find peace and growth by practicing these guided meditations?

It is not enough to receive compensation or counseling after abuse, but one must work to renew and restore health to the psyche. This book is a phenomenal aid to do just that. I recommend it even as a classroom text and definitely as a basis for group work for victims of abuse.
