From Booklist

Lenzi, a mostly well-adjusted high-school student, has moved back to Houston after her schizophrenic father’s death. She and her mother are picking up the pieces of their lives, but just before her birthday, Lenzi is beset by an unshakable auditory buzz. And when she hears a distinct voice pleading for help, she believes her father has “gifted” her with schizophrenia. Her boyfriend, Zak, tries to be supportive. But another young man, Alden, has the understanding that Lenzi requires to come to terms with the role that has been thrust upon her—again. Although she can’t remember her previous life cycles as a Speaker for unresolved issues held by the recently dead, Alden re-educates her, and together they meet and overcome an array of past and present problems. Lindsey has created a credible world and distinct and compelling characters in this first novel. Twisting together fantasy, realism, romance, and suspense, she tells a story that evokes empathy for all three teen characters, while showing how analytical thought can be applied to life’s most difficult problems. Grades 8-12. --Francisca Goldsmith

"...Lindsey deftly remolds and refreshes familiar elements and makes them her own, coupled with a light romantic touch. Her accomplished writing breathes energy into realistically flawed characters and smoothly builds to the book's intense climax." - Publishers Weekly

What if all of a sudden you started hearing noises inside your head? The sound of static growing louder and more persistent each day, becoming even more distracting. And what if one day those noises turned into voices? Voices pleading for your help. Clamoring to be heard. What would you think?

You'd think you were going crazy. Because there couldn't possibly be another reason. Anything else would be even more insane.

So, the only conclusion Lenzi could reach was that she was losing her mind. There wasn't any other answer that made sense. Not when her father heard voices, too. Voices that drove him to end his life as his only means of escape from the torment.

But when she meets Alden and he offers her a different explanation, she's not so sure that she's the only one who's crazy. Because what he suggests is certainly not a part of any reality she's ever known.

Reincarnation? Past lives? Speakers and Protectors who help ensure that lost souls find their way? And that she is supposedly a Speaker and Alden is her Protector and has been for many lifetimes? None of this could be anything more than some deluded fantasy. It has to be. And he must be even more insane than she is.

Besides, how could she even think of believing him when she can't remember anything? And if they've had lifetimes together, as he suggests, why doesn't she remember him?

With only these two options before her - admit that she's crazy and live a life filled with hospitals and doctors and medication or accept what Alden is telling her and spend her days resolving unfinished business for Earth-bound spirits - Lenzi is not thrilled with either choice. But she knows how things ended for her father. And Alden is sort of gorgeous....

The Short Version:
Creepy and engaging from the start, Shattered Souls twists ghosts with the heaven and hell concept in an original and well executed manner. With a strong protagonist, action and build up early on, and an explosive climax, this one definitely pulls the reader in from the start and doesn't let go. Add in the gorgeous writing and blend of easy banter and intense situations, and this is a stellar debut and an author to take note of.

The Extended Version:
Lenzi is a very dimensional, well rounded character, whose personality comes through early on. She is brave and determined, and despite the fear she often feels, always finds the strength to face it head on. Terrified she's becoming schizophrenic just like her father, Lenzi struggles early on but continues to push through. With an easy relationship and connection to her boyfriend, and a strained but still loving and trusting one to her mother, she has a small but firm support system. She is an easy character to like and root for, despite making mistakes.

Zak, her boyfriend, is charming and likable early on, and though he brings plenty of tension to the table as the story progresses, he very clearly cares for her deeply. There are some sweet moments between the pair, and some heartbreaking and intense ones as well. He pulls out both the best and the worst in Lenzi, and though he doesn't have a constant presence within the story, he is built strongly enough early on to remain memorable throughout.

Alden is completely swoonworthy, charming, cocky and relaxed while also having his moments of insecurity and awkwardness. His relationship with Lenzi is built and developed in a very steady and understanding manner, having both an immediate intensity and a slow yearning.

Shattered Souls completely blew me away. I loved everything about this book! Lindsey has weaved a wonderful story full of mystery, paranormal, and romance. Her writing is gorgeous! I fell in love with all of her characters, especially Alden. He has to be one of my favorite heros of YA! He is so scrumptious! I am so happy that I didn't have to wait until December to read this. The only thing I have to complain about is I have to wait that much longer for a possible sequel.

Lenzi is a sweet yet complicated girl who has started to hear voices. Her dad recently died when he committed suicide and she is afraid that she is becoming schizophrenic, just like he was. She doesn't want to look like a mental patient to her mom and boyfriend Zak, but she can't stop her reactions to the voices. She just wishes they would leave her alone so she could live in peace. When Alden shows up, she is thrown completely for a loop and everything that she has ever known changes.

I felt so awful for Lenzi and all the things she had to go through with her dad. I could feel the pain she held whenever she thought of him. She loves him so much but fears that she is schizophrenic, just like him. Her boyfriend Zak is everything she thinks she could ever want. He understands her and puts up with her weirdness. Problems arise between them when Alden comes around though, and she begins to harbor feelings for him. She doesn't want to fall for Alden but she can't seem to stop her self. He knows exactly what she is going through and aids her with the spirit resolutions. They are the perfect team together.

Alden is muey caliente! He is such an amazing guy and puts up with Lenzi even when she denies what she is. He thinks about her in ways that he shouldn't and doesn't want to distract Lenzi. He is so torn!
