Shattering Entertainment!,
By Jeffrey Scott Shapiro (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shattered [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a fantastic suspense thriller, rich in Hitchcock influence and filled with numerous twists and turns. It is by far the best mystery in recent years. Tom Berenger is a recovering amnesiac who has survived a near-fatal car crash with his wife, Greta Scacchi. After undergoing successful reconstructive face surgery, Berenger tries to piece his life together to recall his identity. The partner of a high-powered San Francisco architectural firm, Berenger begins to feel out of place when he can't seem to remember his old designs or his friends. One by one, those closest to him secretly tell him contradictory details about his life and his marriage. In some accounts, he treated his wife badly, while in others he was a good husband. Although the stories don't add up, Berenger is certain of one fact - his wife recently cheated on him with a shadowy man named Jack Stanton while the couple and their friends were vacationing in Mexico. With the help of a private investigator, played by Bob Hoskins, Berenger discovers that Stanton is still alive and that his accident may have actually been an orchestrated attempt against his life. Torn between who to believe, his instincts and his paranoia, Berenger delves deeper into his past only to find a stunning and shocking conclusion - that either himself or someone close to him has killed in the past... and must inevitably kill again to protect a dark and terrifying secret.

Great Wolfgang Petersen mystery! When Tom Berenger awakes from a bad car accident he finds he can not remember much. He begins to see flashbacks and his conversations with others help him to realize who he really was and who was murdered. This is one of the better movies I have seen Berenger in and I enjoyed it. Good supporting cast, music, and sets. Well worth owning on DVD. If you like this be sure to catch Tom in "Shoot To Kill" which will also be out on DVD soon and in "Sniper".

WHO AM I?,

SHATTERED is Wolfgang Petersen doing Brian DePalma doing Alfred Hitchcock and as a mystery/thriller, it has some intriguing moments. Tom Berenger stars as David Merrick, a wealthy businessman who is in a horrible car crash, needs plastic surgery and has amnesia to boot. Greta Scacchi is his devoted wife who tries to nurse him back to health and help him remember his past. Bob Hoskins shines as a pet store owner/private investigator who also tries to piece the puzzle together. All is not as it seems though; is Scacchi trying to kill her husband? Is she having an affair with a handsome stranger? Is Corbin Bernsen wearing a toupee?
The movie keeps your interest and although the twist at the end is fairly obvious, it does keep you guessing.

Shattered - A Mind Twister,

This is a excellent film for those who love intrigue. I personally thought the level of suspense and suprise was generally unequalled in modern day film. In my opinion it was well cast and directed. Great performances by Berenger and Hoskins. A Hitchcock it's not, but if that's your bag, I think you'll be pleased.

A revelation that was consistent with the clues but completely unexpected,

Rich San Francisco architect Dan Merrick and his wife Judith are in a terrible auto accident. While Judith is thrown clear and relatively unscathed, Dan rides the car down to the bottom of the cliff and is very lucky to be alive. His face is severely damaged and he is in a deep coma. When Dan recovers consciousness, he suffers from severe amnesia about his identity and undergoes repeated plastic surgery on his face. This surgery is successful and he recovers with few physical scars. All through Dan's ordeal, Judith is by his side, offering love, encouragement and knowledge about his past.
However, as Dan begins to have flashes of insight into his past, inconsistencies begin to appear. There is evidence of adultery, contradictions about the manner of the accident and hints that nothing was as it appears to him. When Dan encounters private investigator Gus Klein and talks with him, some clues appear and he learns that he himself may have been a very bad guy. While we were watching the movie, my wife Kathy and I conversed about who were the "bad guys." As clues were revealed, we altered our opinions, as even the innocent characters seem to have a tone of wildness to them. There is a stunning revelation that neither of us suspected; it suddenly made it all come together. As is the case in the best mysteries, the solution is a logical conclusion from the clues yet is completely unanticipated.
