Amazon.com Product Description

Ubisoft brings you the freedom of the mountains with Shaun White Snowboarding for Windows Vista/XP. Developed in close collaboration with Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White, Shaun White Snowboarding lets you create your own experience in the game. Whether you choose to compete and do tricks in the terrain park, or carve new paths in the back country, the choice is yours.

Get massive air and perform different tricks. View larger.

You can shoot videos and upload them for others to see. View larger.
Freedom to Ride on Four Different Mountains
Gamers have their choice of four mountains -- Alaska, Park City, Europe (Alps), and Japan -- each offering a different kind of terrain and feel, as well as landscapes and views. Alaska, for example, has a lot of peak boarding with features such as avalanches and ice chasms. Park City, the famed resort in Utah, features buildings and layouts from the actual resort.

The mountains are huge, with incredible graphics that allow you to see dynamic elements up to 20 miles away. As you ski, objects and locations far away in the distance, such as the base of the mountain, become larger and larger, and the background has the feel of a real, live environment rather than a static image.

Within each mountain, there are peak, back country, and park (resort) areas that provide a variety of gameplay. Just as you would expect, there are plenty of trails on each mountain, with each slope rated from green circle (easy) to double black diamond (extremely difficult).

Race, Do Tricks, Carve New Paths
Shaun White Snowboarding lets you do anything you want at a mountain: you can speed down the fastest slopes, get massive air and do tricks on the half-pipe, and even throw snowballs at other boarders.

Shaun White Snowboarding gives you unprecedented control of the snowboarder, with separate controls for tricks, balance, and grip, allowing you to perform a ton of different tricks on the ground, in the air, and on rails. The game was designed with realistic physics, so each trick looks and performs just as you'd expect it to see it in real life.

While you go down a mountain, you'll see various challenges scattered along the way, such as grinding on rails and specific tricks on the half-pipe.

When you get to the bottom, you can take off your board and hop on a chair or a helicopter to get back to the top and find a new trail.

In the single player mode, Shaun White serves as your mentor as you complete different challenges and competitions until you become good enough to put your skills up against Shaun White himself.

Share the Mountain with Other Online Players
Shaun White Snowboarding also features online multiplayer gameplay. Players can create their own challenges and participate with other online boarders, compete in half-pipe competitions, and even battle it out in straight racing down a trail. With mountains populated by real gamers, you'll feel like you're really out there on the slopes. A standout feature is the video camera that lets you film other boarders doing tricks and upload them for everyone to see.

As you win competitions and do challenges, you earn cash that can be used to purchase new apparel, boards, bindings, and more -- all designed to make your character unique and your gaming experience more fun.

Perhaps one of the most satisfying things you can do is hurl a snowball at another player and talk a little trash afterwards.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this if you don't have internet-connection (but if you don't you're probably not reading this anyway...), January 17, 2010

At first I was disappointed by this game. The graphics were just a blurry white mess. You could barely tell there was a snowboarder there, and the landscape was just weird. Then I hooked my computer up to the internet and the game automatically downloaded the necessary patches needed to fix the graphics, and now it's just smooth sailin'. Great snowboard game.

1.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it, December 20, 2008

I have been looking for a good snowboard game for PC for years. I thought this would be it. It's not. I have given it about 5 hours total play so far. The controls are really difficult. Just steering is awkward let alone air control. Press forward to speed up, but you cant press forward when you jump or it will flip. The grabs are pretty easy using the right stick on my Logitech Rumblepad. Spinning is really inconsistent. Sometimes it spins, sometimes it doesnt. The game is not very clear on the parameters necessary for certain moves. I also had to fix the in game updater so the game would run. I dont see how a patch would fix the handling. The graphics are good and they give a good sense of height and depth. The controls are really frustrating. Its a game, it should not be frustrating. I am afraid this one was a waste of money. I haven't felt this much remorse in years of gaming. -Frustrated.

1.0 out of 5 stars not compatible with vista 64-bit **UPDATE - SOLUTION FOUND**, April 16, 2009

(see update further down) My old PC and graphics card could barely handle this game at all, so I built a new PC - i7-920, GTX285 SSC, 6GB RAM and Windows Vista home premium 64-bit. This is the first game I installed, and I find it IS NOT COMPATIBLE with vista 64-bit. I'm not happy.

Googled and found lots of angry people with the same problem, but no solutions. I've tried disabling visual themes, and tried running under XP compatibility mode (my old PC ran the game on XPpro, albeit badly).. The game installs and patches itself fine, but crashes straight after going into full screen on game start. Disabling full screen does not help.

Apparently Ubisoft couldn't care less. Such a big let-down. What a waste of money and time.

*** UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UPDATE ****

I posted that I have never been able to get this game to work on 64-bit Vista, even in XP compatibility mode. Finally, after many fruitless searches and help requests to Ubisoft, someone posted on a forum I use and suggested I try turning off HT (hyper-threading) in the BIOS. It worked!!!! Means I run on 4 cores instead of 8, and so I have to reboot and switch HT back on after, but at least there is a solution!!!

Having used that solution, I found the game awesome. With two GTX 285 SSC's running in SLI and an i7-920 clocked to 3.8GHz, the graphics are clean, crisp and smooth. Controls take some getting used to, and I strongly recommend a gamepad for this game, but by all means, buy it and shred.. great fun!

Gave 5 stars for fun, and 4 for overall since Ubisoft were so clueless about this problem, and it took around a year to resolve so I could play this game.
