Early Classics, January 7, 2008
This review is from: Shaw Nuff (Audio CD)
How do you select the most important early Gillespie big band and small group tracks? You don't - you acquire it all!
The music here is absolutely brilliant, but why is it not an entire box, I ask myself...
With Charlie Parker, Milt Jackson, young Sarah Vaughan on one song, Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon and other confreres, Gillespie cuts classic after classic, interspersed with just a few mediocre performances (that probably went after commercial appeal)...
Since most of these songs are essential, but there are not enough of them, this is perfect for Gillespie beginners (actually, it's probably obligatory for them...)...

Good BeBop Music, October 3, 2011
I have an earlier issue of this CD released by MUSICRAFT records, with the same cover art and track listing. This music has been reissued many time by many labels, but I think this is the best track selection, and the it has good sound (as good as shorter the Savoy Records re-issues). I like all of the 17 instrumental BeBop tracks, (but I ignored the three vocal tracks). I think this disc has the best value (and sound) for a single CD reissue of Dizzy's 1945-1946 BeBop music.
If you like this music, be sure to check out the famous re-recorded BeBop music of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker on
Bird & Diz (1950)remastered on the Verve Label. I think that is one of the best of the early BeBop music recordings.
