Shawna Ray is the author of the children's book, "Take a Trip to Diverse City," that was inspired by a real life situation with her son and his friend. Shawna responded to meet a need and provide a teachable resource for schools, encouraging kids to embrace and celebrate their differences while understanding how we are all similar in many ways and connected as ONE. The original book was self published through Winters Press in 2007 and Shawna started her own publishing company, Rhythm Ray Inc. in January 2008 to release a special edition of Diverse City with national boy band, B5, including a CD with B5 narration and Shawna Ray singing the book with an added chorus. Shawna obtained her BA in Public Relations/Communications from Otterbein College and has worked in Public Relations at IPSC, The International Poverty Solutions Collaborative, a Center for Innovation at The Ohio State University; as the Director of Special Events and Volunteer Relations at United Way of Central Ohio, and as a Program Coordinator and trainer in the areas of disability and diversity awareness at Goodwill Columbus.
A finalist on the NBC Special, "America's Favorite Mom" in 2008, and divorced single Mother with two kids, Shawna Ray released her debut album "Open" on April 11, 2010 including songs that she has been writing for years while working in Public Relations at various nonprofit organizations. Ray's mosaic music has a fresh sound and real light that stretches the genre box with a mix of pop soul influenced by blues, funk, jazz, R & B, and gospel sounds. Shawna Ray's authentic lyrics, inspiring message, and pure presence meet the audience in a personal way, as she looks forward to the release of her second album and a musical memoir, while sharing her book at various schools, churches and community events.
