When you pick up a copy of Marcie Macari's new book, and I recommend that you do, try this fun experiment: hold it next to a copy of What to Expect When You're Expecting and watch as they magnetically repel each other.

Just kidding. :-)

But "She Births: A Modern Woman's Guidebook for an Ancient Rite of Passage" sets itself apart from your standard pregnancy and birth book right from the strong statement of the raw, emotive cover art. Macari is a mother of three who offers forth this self-published effort to "every woman who has even given Birth - to children, ideas, or themselves". Placing birth back into a context of a "rite of passage", Macari emphasizes the sacred and spiritual side of birth. You will not find standard childbirth education fare in this book. If you're looking for recipes, exercises or cute little "what does the baby look like now" graphics, you'll need to look elsewhere. But a woman seeking a book that will speak to her spirit and not just her mind, will have found a sister in Macari.

Macari's writing style is easy to read and at times I even laughed out loud. (One chapter subtitled "Is Childbirth painful" starts, "Yes. End of Chapter. Sorry, I couldn't resist.") I did find her use of capitalization somewhat distracting, although I see the point she was trying to make by emphasizing particular words. For a self-published book I found the layout and design to be excellent. Worth the purchase price alone are the fabulous quotes about birth interspersed between sections and the wonderful birth stories within.

"She Births" is sure to cause controversy and discomfort in some, and renewal and empowerment for others. Judge for yourself, AFTER you have read it. :-)

"She Births" provides an articulate blend of strong emotions and piercing thoughts on why the way we birth our children is relevant. I read this book soon after it was published, and I am glad to see it available on amazon. Birth can be a time when the woman uncovers strengths and intuitions which she never imagined she possesed, and which will help guide her onward through motherhood.

Own the journey, wherever it might lead you. Birth your babies in awareness, is the basic message of this book. If this offends you, please ask yourself why.

I asked my midwife for a recommendation for a book that spoke to the spiritual (not religious) aspect of being pregnant and birthing. She recommended this book and "Birthing from Within" (also a good book, but I liked this one better). Keep in mind that this author is VERY pro natural birth/anti-hospital and even goes so far as to endorse unattended birthing (having no medical professional or midwife present). I can't say I agreed with all of her opinions or could relate to the strength of some of her convictions, but I felt that she had very good points about women and their relationship with their bodies. She definitely gets "new-agey" when she recommends you "ask" your baby what kind of birth they want but again, she does bring up many different ways of thinking about various aspects of pregnancy and the birthing process that other mainstream books don't touch.
At the end of each chapter she provides a written meditation and insightful questions to help you gain a deeper sense of the info presented in the chapter.
If you are looking for a book that speaks to the emotional and spiritual aspects of birthing, this book can give you a more well-rounded way of thinking about the process.

This book has some beautiful concepts and an obvious positive intention to help women connect to the spiritual aspects of birthing. Unfortunately, it is also laced with a host of judgments the author has about birth that are (perhaps unconsciously) shaming and dismissive of women who want a natural birth and subsequently face a need for interventions or who begin in a different place than the author believes to be ideal. The author's biases interfere with the good that she is hoping to do and may create more harm than good.

Marcie Macari writes with such passion. This book serves many purposes, it offers healing to those who have been unfortunate to have a birth experience which was difficult for many reasons. It also helps to bring a sense of much needed inner reflection and primal-wisdom that women are born with, to allow them to access their own inner strengths to create a birthing experience which is right for them. I am a childbirth educator and feel that this book is just as valuable for professionals as well as for pregnant women. Wonderful!
