Book Description

August 1, 2008
It's 1953 and disgraced scientist Noel Glass works as a P.I. to redeem himself for a deadly experiment that cost the lives of six people, including his fiancée's. In walks a rich recluse who offers information that Glass was framed for the deadly accident. As Glass struggles to clear his name, he uncovers an evil organization bent on using his own invention for world domination. Who can Glass trust when everyone is keeping secrets? His mysterious Japanese sidekick - Wan Lee? The sultry blues singer - Merlot Sterling? The man-mountain bodyguard - Vincent Richmond? From the desolate streets of Industry City, Colorado to a showdown in Chi-town, Glass encounters death at every turn. As he's pursued by two Mayan hit men determined to make him history, Glass must rediscover the self he lost years ago and face off against the one ghost he swore he laid to rest. She Murdered Me with Science blends detective noir with the pulp science fiction of Forties and Fifties. A child science prodigy, Glass uses forensics to solve crimes long before it was considered a legitimate resource for the police. He's part Sherlock Holmes - part Mike Hammer. Through his quest, Glass interacts with historical figures like J. Edgar Hoover, DNA Scientist James Watson and Photojournalist Art Shay. The story interweaves true events from the beginnings of the Cold War era with a fictional Armageddon. Glass also gets drawn into the growing racial tensions of the times, including the Trumple Park Riots, because of his femme fatale, the chanteuse Merlot. Cut from classic females of the era, Merlot takes no prisoners on stage or in the bedroom. She Murdered Me with Science is laced with the blues, packed with action and armed to kill.

Editorial Reviews

Review

She Murdered Me with Science, by David Boop, $15.95. Noel Glass is a down-and-out scientist earning an occasional living as a private detective. He lives in the Little Osaka area of Industry City, an improbably large metropolis between Denver and Colorado Springs.

Glass has finished the plans for his great invention of a car that runs on water when the roof falls in. At first a wealthy industrialist offers to produce the prototype he needs, but at the cost of bringing back an episode Glass had tried to forget.

A microwave experiment became a disaster, killing the woman he loved and ruining his career. Shocked out of his 14-year daze, Glass sees that it may not have been an accident and could be the reason someone is trying to assassinate him now. He doesn't know if the masked Mayan warriors were sent by the CIA in addition to their regular agents, but Glass runs away from all of them.

He flees Colorado to Nevada and New Mexico, where he finds a beautiful blues singer and Russian spies. Along the way, he uncovers a conspiracy much larger than his plans for a better car.

Boop goes beyond the usual suspects when the conspiracy is uncovered for an interesting alternative history twist. There's nonstop action showing a love for private eyes, mad scientists and blues music. --Fred Cleaver, Science Fiction reviewer, The Denver Post, August 31,2008

More About the Author

David Wayne Boop was born July 23, 1968 in Bridgeport, CT. He was adopted to non-denominational Christian ministers. He has no siblings that he knows of. In 1980, his family moved to Kronenwetter, WI and graduated from D.C. Everest High School in '86. He's lived in five states (CT, WI, TN, CO, AZ,) thirteen cities and traveled to 47 out of 50 states not including DC.

Dave has had over 50 jobs in his working career. He attests that to being easily bored. (Most people, however, would say it's due to his inability to respect authority.) The jobs have varied across a wide field, though many would fall under the entertainment umbrella, the weirdest being Beetlejuice impersonator. His list of interests and fields of study run the gambit of geeky.

Dave says he's a binge writer, which means he writes until he pukes, but is getting into healthier habits. In 1995, he was diagnosed with ADD, which made a lot of sense if you knew Dave. He started writing in high school, but couldn't handle the revision process because of retyping whole pages, so he switched to creating commercials because they were shorter. With the advent of word processors, he started over.

Dave's fiction took off with a third place win in the Opus Imagico Writer's Contest. Judged by NYT Bestselling Michael Stackpole (who would later blurb Dave's first novel), Mike suggested Dave form a writer's group with the other winners. He would go on to be published in "Tales of the Talisman" magazine and "SF Trails," amongst others. To date he has published over a dozen stories.

His debut novel, "She Murdered Me with Science," came out in August, 2008 from the Denver-based Flying Pen Press. FPP also released three anthologies of which Dave has short stories: "Full Throttle Space Tales #1 - Space Pirates," "Full Throttle Space Tales #2 - Space Sirens," and "Full Throttle Space Tales #3 - Space Grunts."

Other Anthologies include; "Mystery Men (and Women) Vol 1" from Airship 27, "2020 Visions" from M Brane, "Six Guns Striaght from Hell" from Pirate Dog Press, "Bête Noir Magazine" #2," "Death Rattle Magazine" #2, "The Green Hornet Casefiles" from Moonstone Books, and "Rapid Decomposition" from Library of the Living Dead.

Hoping to move his writing further along, he went back to college. Dave has two degrees; one in Broadcasting and Commercial Production from Madison Media Institute (formerly TransAmerican School of Broadcasting) and one in Electronics from Intellitec (formerly Technical Trades Institute). It's apropos that a mystery writer would want to go in for the third degree, and so he had started over. He's spent four years part-time at Arapahoe Community College studying English and plans finish his degree elsewhere. His goal is an English Masters before age fifty.

Dave has a strong belief in God and Jesus Christ, however, has major problems with organized religion. He teaches his son, and those that care to listen, that faith is not a religion. He is always willing to share his thoughts, but will never force them on anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty stew of pulp and noir, August 19, 2008

This review is from: She Murdered Me with Science (Paperback)
I had a great deal of fun reading She Murdered Me with Science. David Boop takes all the rich atmosphere of noir detective fiction and seasons with the superscience and global conspiracies of the pulp tradition that Indiana Jones rose from. His hero is a weary detective, maybe not too weary to dream of making the world a better place -- assuming he lives that long. From the moment he discovers an eccentric industrialist in his office, he's kept on the move by a variety of villains -- or possibly allies with deeply mixed motives. It's a classic series of chases, detection, and shifting explanations on the way to a spectacular climax. She Murdered Me with Science is great summer reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Those glorious golden age sci-fi pulp magazines have now been reincarnated, October 9, 2008
This review is from: She Murdered Me with Science (Paperback)
Those glorious golden age sci-fi pulp magazines have now been reincarnated with the introduction of five trade paperback science fiction novels of galactic adventure, save-the-world suspense, and the merged technologies of magic and science. "She Murdered Me With Science" showcases David Boop's storytelling talent in a tale of intrigue when a disgraced scientist turned forensic analyst uncovers a conspiracy to take over the United States. With their brightly colored 'pulp magazine' style covers, all five of these new titles from Flying Pen Press are enthusiastically recommended for fantasy and science fiction enthusiasts, and would make enduringly popular addition to community library collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pulp fiction read, September 29, 2008

This review is from: She Murdered Me with Science (Paperback)
This is the first novel from the author and it definitely brings a twist to the pulp detective genre. The book features an interesting and flawed lead character that is often struggling with his own inner demons as often as he is struggling against the antagonists. Liberally sprinkled with sci fi elements and conspiracy theories, the story zooms alongs and exposes a deepening plot filled with a wide range of unique characters that all have their own agendas. Boop has found ways to weave historical events and people into his fictional story to give it a sense of place and purpose beyond a casual pulp adventure and it lays a foundation universe for hopefully many more Noel Glass adventures to come. Definitely a suggested read.
