About the Author

JANINE CANAN MD, Stanford and NYU Medical School graduate, is a psychiatrist and the author of ten books of poetry. These include Her Magnificent Body, Changing Woman, the award-winning anthology She Rises like the Sun: Invocations of the Goddess by Contemporary American Women Poets, the translations Star in My Forehead: Selected Poems by Else Lasker-Schueler, and The Rhyme of the Ag-Ed Mariness: Last Poems of Lynn Lonidier (edited by Canan).

Canan's work has appeared in countless journals and dozens of anthologies, notably New Directions, Up Late, American Poets Say Goodbye to the Twentieth Century, The Divine Feminine, From the Realm of the Ancestors, Get Well Wishes, and Her Words. She has given poetry performances at the Smithsonian, Rutgers, CUNY, Elliott Bay Books, Powell Books, University of California Art Museum, Shakespeare & Co in Paris, as well as on radio and television.

In the Palace of Creation: Selected Works 1969—1999 by Janine Canan, and a collection of Canan’s short stories, Journeys with Justine, are forthcoming.

More About the Author

JANINE CANAN was born in Los Angeles and today lives in Sonoma. She attended Stanford cum laude, University of California at Berkeley and New York University School of Medicine, and for over thirty years has been a practicing psychiatrist. Her first book of poems received a National Endowment from the Arts grant. Since then, she has published 18 books of poetry, translations, anthologies, essays and stories. She translated the poets Else Lasker-Schüler and Francis Jammes, and edited award-winning anthologies of the teachings of Indian humanitarian Amma, and contemporary American Goddess poetry. Her work appears in anthologies by Andrei Codrescu, Andrew Harvey, James Laughlin, June Cotner and many others; and has been featured by American Booksellers, City Lights, Small Press Review, and Spirituality & Health.
