5.0 out of 5 stars " A Love Story Is A Love Story...Regardless Of Sexual Preference"

This novel was 263 pages of a well-used tree!!

This is the first novel that I have read by Shonda, and I was impressed.

She had me hooked from the very first words, which for me (an avid book reader) is hard to do!!!

She did an excellent job penning a story about 2 beautiful spirited individuals and their struggle to exist in...

She Slipped and Fell was a story about best friends Tina and Kendall who "slipped" one night; crossing the line between friends and lovers. Their one night together opened doors that neither one of them were ready for. Tina fell hard for her dearest friend Kendall, and was willing to go public about their relationship. Kendall on the other hand, was still well tucked away in her closet and was not ready to come out. That act of selfishness on Kendall's part ultimately destroyed not only their relationship, but their friendship as well. After years of separation, the two were reunited, and proved that true love could withstand the test of time.

I wish that I had nothing but rave reviews to offer regarding She Slipped and Fell. Unfortunately, I found it to be a hard read because of the tense inconsistencies, along with other grammatical errors. The repetition in the beginning was annoying. Both Tina and Kendall told the same story one after the other, which forced me, the reader, to have to re-read the same scene twice.

She Slipped and Fell, in my opinion, has not had any professional editing. I found myself focusing more on the errors within the manuscript than the actual story itself. Shonda, the author, had a great story idea but fell short in her delivery. Everything just seemed to run together. There was no structure and that caused the story plot to be poorly executed. Needless to say, I was very disappointed as I read this novel. She Slipped and Fell truly read like the work of an amateur writer.

*I am not a professional reviewer. The above is my personal opinion.*

5.0 out of 5 stars " A Love Story Is A Love Story...Regardless Of Sexual Preference", May 27, 2010
This review is from: She Slipped and Fell (Paperback)

This novel was 263 pages of a well-used tree!!

This is the first novel that I have read by Shonda, and I was impressed.

She had me hooked from the very first words, which for me (an avid book reader) is hard to do!!!

She did an excellent job penning a story about 2 beautiful spirited individuals and their struggle to exist in a world that denounces them because of their sexual preference. I will say that the story is about 2 lesbians...only because we exist in a world that still justifies treating PEOPLE like 2nd citizens and makes judgments that they are not in position to make. I say the story is about 2 lesbians...only because Shonda touches on an important issue that plagues our society, and in her novel, she sets a stage of confidences amidst the chaos for people labeled because of their sexual preference. Only for those reasons will I mention that the story was about 2 lesbians. Otherwise, I wouldn't care to mention it at all.

[No Spoiler Alert!! This review will not ruin it for those who haven't read it yet!!!]

THE STORY IS ABOUT 2 PEOPLE WHO "SLIPPED AND FELL" IN LOVE, AND THE OBSTACLES THEY HAD TO ENDURE TO OVERCOME HURDLES IN THEIR WAY OF EMBRACING THAT LOVE!!!

RECOMMENDATION: Get the book!!!

I was able to connect to the characters and the raw emotions they felt on this journey through life. I could see the characters' faces in my mind and the places they were in, in the book. I was not inundated with pointless, trashy sex-scenes reflective of promiscuous and self-destructive behavior. The "love-making" scenes were vital and imperative to the penning of a great novel...causing heat to rise in my delta.

It was realistic and encouraging...relevant and catching...necessary and appreciated.

The twists and turns added the "page-tuner" effect that I so thoroughly enjoy when I read a novel. I READ THE BOOK IN HOURS...LITERALLY!!! I had to keep my eyes from wandering to the next page before I finished reading the one I was on. And for most readers, I'm sure the ending was wind-blowing. I LOVE IT THROUGH AND THROUGH!!!

BUY IT....READ IT....REVIEW IT....RECOMMEND IT!!

5 Stars From Me!!

I was so excited to order this book and couldn't wait until it was delivered thanks to all the 5 star reviews. What a waste of anticipation. Thought the writing was simplistic, the characters one-dimensional, the pacing stilted, the sex cringe-inducing...I tried to like it but just couldn't. Hours of my life and $10 of pay never to return.

This is the first gay/lesbian book that I have read and I have one word for it. Excellent!! Before I started reading this book I said,"Okay.I'll just read a few pages and then go to bed." Well that plan went out the window! I ended up reading into the wee hours of the morning! The author had me from chapter 1. I like how she told the story from both characters point of view. You could feel their emotions throughout the book. And the twist that she puts in the story towards the end. Didn't see it coming! The story in itself shows that love is not only found in the traditional sense. Don't see how you could be dissapointed with this book!

From all the good reviews I read, I thought i was in for a gem~ how wrong I was....
The most bad thing about this novel is that it doesn't focus on the relationship between the two main characters, Kendall and Tina, however it takes them each at a time, how they grow up and discover there sexuality, The only good thing about this is that it does have a happy ending *which I love* but all in all not what I was looking for.
examples of novels I liked are Lynn Galli's Novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, January 4, 2011

Poor writing and predictable story (even the whodunit was not hard to figure out) are the two things that most characterize this novel. I wanted to like it because it focused on African American lesbians and there are too few lesbian novels, particularly good ones, that do. In the end, however, I was just disappointed.

I hate to leave bad reviews - and I'm especially sad to have to leave one on a lesbian novel. There's such a dearth of good lesbian fiction! I saw the great reviews and I saw the bad reviews. Having learned to not trust reviews completely, I tried to read it for myself. I thought, surely this'll be at least decent. But man, this book... Good points: the cover is beautiful and the title is nice. If only the inside lived up to it. After reading the blurb on the back, I worried, but blurbs aren't always an accurate way to judge. I made it somewhere around twenty pages in before giving up (and I don't often give up on books). The writing is horrendous as a whole. The prose is awful and the dialogue feels so false... I realise that She Slipped and Fell is self-published. As someone who has been writing fiction for over twenty years, I would never discourage any writer, particularly one who enjoys writing fiction for lesbians. That said, I'm not saying the following in a cruel way, just as fact: the author needs a great deal of practice and could do with some creative writing classes. She has potential. She just needs to hone it.

I curse, cuss and am very colorful, but for whatever reason the language in this threw me. I was never able to really connect with the characters until the very end when they "matured" and then that was too short to bring me around to having enjoyed the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't be intimidated, very good book for realistic population, October 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First of all let me say this, I've read over 60 lesbian/gay books and I am a big supporter but I never write reviews. Why? Well to me ones opinion on a book is like choosing a partner, to each their own but I felt I had to break the trend for this book and defend the author on this. It is a good book with lots of excitement and twists. It's filled with slang, a little new for some readers, but to me makes it better because it's not filled with all the sterotypical corporate lesbian, players, and emotional over loads of some of the other books I have read. These characters are very down to earth. The way the author gives the Point of views is excellent. Please don't be discoraged by some peoples inability to think outside the box and the belief urban lesbianism doe not exist, although I love my Georgia Beers and radclyffe's I like the change of pace. It's a very good read.

I spent a lot of time looking at reviews before I decided to try this book and said "Hey, why not?" I was so psyched when I finally got this book in the mail...had so much expectation. Couldn't get into the author's style of writing, didn't care about the characters...money, wasted. I've yet to finish it T_T
