5.0 out of 5 stars True Gold
Herbert Gold is a master stylist whose novels are so smooth that they are surely written with the playfulness and ease that follow long experience. I've read this one twice, and look forward to reading it several more times. 1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible
This book was boring. The story line was idiotic and the characters were completely unlikable. I kept reading to hope it would improve but it never did. It was a total waste of time and is going right into the donation pile.

Herbert Gold is a master stylist whose novels are so smooth that they are surely written with the playfulness and ease that follow long experience. I've read this one twice, and look forward to reading it several more times. Gold's work is imbued with his very strong temperament; he is humorous, sad, deeply humane, emotionally savvy, always entertaining, and he writes some of the most likable and engaging prose in C20th Am. Lit. I form the impression from this distance that he's a little underappreciated nowadays. Another pleasure to be found in his work is the way he captures San Francisco more richly, and, at least for literary purposes, more ambivalently, than just about anyone else. I didn't intend to write a review, having merely looked up Gold on Amazon in the hope of finding a new novel by him, but couldn't let the other review of 'She Took My Arm As If She Loved Me' stand without another to balance it. I also recommend: 'Fathers', 'True Love', 'Dreaming', 'A Girl of Forty', 'Daughter Mine', and a book of selected stories, 'Lovers & Cohorts'.
