5.0 out of 5 stars This One's a "Must Read!"
She Walks in Beauty has something for everyone: exotic locales, romance, adventure, history, the search for one's self, and the bonus of a book-within-a-book. Ms. Conn delivers on all levels, and never lets the reader down in this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing :(
I enjoyed the movie Claire of the Moon, but when I read the book I found it to be a bit sophomoric. I am not a fan of "cookie cutter" type novels and She Walks in Beauty would definately fall into that catagory in my opinion. Even if I had mounds of free time I would not spend much of it on this book, it's an extreme let down.

Yes, the main characters are lesbians -- and if that's a problem for you this shouldn't be in your Shopping Cart. For those open-minded souls, She Walks in Beauty will become a new favorite book. I know it's mine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the standard romance book, April 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: She Walks in Beauty (Paperback)
The book is closer to a movie script. It switches off between at least 4 plots. The main story is pretty good but at times it's hard to follow. However, I recommend it even with that because it's not predictible like so many other romance novels that I've read.

This is Conn's best work. A novel within a novel, and the reader gets to choose which she likes best. Mine is Spencer's story, although I love Cynara. Make a fire, brew some tea, curl up with your comforter in a comfy chair and indulge yourself. A wonderful, wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding., December 5, 2001

Ms. Conn interweaves various narrative voices to tell the story of a woman's remarkable journey to self-discovery. The novel explores the often arduous relationship between art and artist, dreams and reality, idealism and the practical. Overall, the protagonist leads us into a well-crafted, witty, and deeply moving tale. I highly recommend this read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a great escape?, November 17, 2001

This review is from: She Walks in Beauty (Paperback)
It awaits you in "She Walks in Beauty." A powerful, well-crafted, and moving story of one women's struggle to find her true self.

I found the journey in to Spencer Atwood's life from childhood to womanhood to be heartfelt and a reflection of what some us face in life's ups and downs. Spencer finds love, passion and yet is still at a loss to find herself. Through friends, memories, writing, a lover, her lover's daughter and at times great solitude, Spencer works to come to her own conclusions. This complex and meaningful novel found me pulling for Spencer as a little girl to Spencer the hard driving adult.

I found that the in-depth characterization of Spencer, Lillian/ Byron and Cynara took me to places and evoked feelings that I seldom reach in today's lesbian novels. Conn has an incredible gift of emotionally tying you into the lives of each character. I was grateful to fully understand the reasons why the characters were motivated to make the decision that they did and to see their human side (baggage and all).

Conn artfully builds each chapter to a pinnacle, and then leaves you in suspense- wanting more. The "more" gets delivered time and time again, as Spencer's journey evolves. I felt that "She Walks in Beauty" is uniquely written to evoke a myriad of emotional feelings that many other lesbian novels never attain. So escape and enjoy as I did!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Time travelling, November 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: She Walks in Beauty (Paperback)
Nicole Conn has written an interesting, attention grabbing book. We can relate - we've all spent time talking to ourselves, wondering about the road not taken. Difficult relationships in the book are made understandable by her candid dialogue; her wide cast of characters are handled with care.

There is some risk in using a time shift and parallel story lines - it complicates but doesn't harm. Paris in the 1920's was a feast of ideas, egos and talent. I think we all wish we could sit quietly in one the corners at Gertrude and Alice's. This book takes us there.

This is Nicole Conn's most mature, thoughtful work to date.

It took me a while to read "She Walks in Beauty" but I finally finished it and did not have to struggle. I am not an eager reader or even a literary person, I am a romantic and Ms. Conn can surely make one feel, every bit romantic. This is "A MUST READ BOOK" and I genuinly recommend it to any woman but especially Lesbian types, like myself. This writer is very thorough and detailed in her every paragraph, articulating different issues, in a sensitive way. Whether or not this is Nicole's real life story and or part fiction, she brought me back to my own dysfunctional family and I could realte to all the emotions from it. Drawing me to four different places, through different seasons of life, was an accomplishment and I look very much forward to more spendid works like this.
Thank you,
Carole Markarian
