This review is from: A Sheaf of Songs from Ireland (Audio CD)
This lovely recital by Bernadette Greevy includes some songs she recorded previously in the 1960's on the Argo label. I still have the LP in my collection as well as her recording of Handel arias which is available on CD. The voice is understandably heavier in this recording of songs which she made 30 years later but it is still capable of expressing deep emotion and delicate nuances. The highlight of the recording is "A soft day", an exquisite song which has stayed in my mind since I first heard it sung by her more than 40 years ago. Bernadette Greevy did not make many recordings, but the ones she did are worth seeking out. Her recording of Mahler's Ruckertlieder is one of my favourites. I was saddened to learn recently that Bernadette Greevy died of cancer at the age of 68 in September 2008.
