Review

"Smart, edgy dialogue and an intriguing cast of characters lift Cohen's 10th Bad Hair Day mystery featuring South Florida hairstylist Marla Shore...Once again, Marla shows she's as adept at investigating murder as she is managing her hair salon." Publisher's Weekly

"The action is fast-paced, the situations and characterizations provide plenty of this author's trademark humor. Her knowledge of the look, feel and social texture of South Florida living is another great attraction for her readers." Florida Weekly

"Mix together a sassy hairdresser with a penchant for sleuthing, a sexy detective and some eccentric friends and neighbors; stir in an unconventional murder or two, bake in the South Florida sun, and you have the makings of Nancy J. Cohen's delicious 'Bad Hair Day' mystery series."--The Island Reporter

Marla is at a friend's wedding when a murder occurs during the reception. Interesting characters and South Florida scenery make "Shear Murder" a cut above other amateur sleuth mysteries." --Sun-Sentinel

Marla Shore is a bridesmaid at her friend Jill's wedding and does all of the hair styling as well. During the salon time before the wedding, Marla picks up on tension between Jill and her sister Torrie. At the wedding venue, Torrie also gets into it with a photographer from the magazine she works at and a rival reporter. After a lot of drama, Jill gets married and Marla goes to find the cake knife at the reception. she finds it but it has been repurposed as a murder weapon in Torrie's chest. Marla's fiance Dalton, a police detective is on the scene and keeps it secure until the locals arrive.
Dalton and Marla have their own wedding to plan and he chides her about getting involved in this murder. Marla has enough on her plate with semi-feuding mothers-in-law, getting flowers, expanding guest lists, etc, but being Jill's friend, she wants to help. Soon she is in up to her neck with photographers, reporters, florists and realtors, all involved with Jill and Torrie, and all having a possible reason to commit murder.

I love this series and this is a great addition. Marla tries to stay out of these murders but she just can't. Dalton is exasperated but supportive for the most part, although he is acting a little strange over their wedding. Marla has to deal with frazzled friends, a molotov cocktail in her salon, an old "friend" of Dalton's and planning the wedding. It is all a wonderful mix of mayhem and romance that Ms. Cohen works into a lovely mystery. I hope the next one comes sooner than later!

This whole series has been a lot of fun.

In this installment, Marla not only does hair for a wedding, but is a bridesmaid and finally a bride. At crunch time for her own wedding plans she is also trying to solve a murder. Marla takes multitasking to a whole new level. Dalton really understands her need to be in the middle of things and his daughter Brianna has a great relationship with Marla. I am so happy this new family is coming together.

The family dynamics at work in both Marla's case and Jill and Torrie's are very entertaining. Marla knows just how to handle her own relatives and her future in-laws. Torrie's family and friends are so dysfunctional the suspects in her death are many and when the culprit was revealed this reader was quite surprised.

This is an ideal cozy mystery full of murder, mayhem, humor and romance. It is so fast paced you will read it in one sitting, just as I did. This book is definitely the perfect book to "escape into" this winter, it will warm you right up!

Format: Hardcover
South Florida beautician Marla Shore prays the next frantic four weeks does not prove to be a "Bad Hair" month. Besides getting married at the end of the stretch to detective Dalton Vail while keeping her mom and her future mother-in-law from a mutual beat-down, Marla renovates her beauty parlor into a spa, works along with her fiancé on their new home, and participates as a bridesmaid in her friend Jill's wedding.

Jill's wedding is perfect until Marla finds the bride's sister Torrie with a knife in her chest under the cake table. The police suspect Jill as she had the motive since the sisters argued over what to do with property they both owned; the means and opportunity as well. Deciding she has a chance to delay her personal issues for a while, Marla investigates which guest murdered the Matron of Honor who had collected damning information on an assortment of people while her fiancé the homicide detective pleads with her to stay out of the case.

It has been couple of years since the last "A Bad Hair Day Mystery" (see Killer Knots, Dead Roots and Perish by Pedicure), but Marla remains a wonderful amateur sleuth as she is a likable heroine who uses the homicide investigation to put off her personal workload. Although she has found corpses before (see Died Blonde), this is an engaging fast-paced romantic cozy in which readers will enjoy the antics of Marla as her life is overwhelming at the moment, but still adds one more murderous item to the mix.

So glad to see that Nancy Cohen came out with a new book. This one was great. I read all of the Bad Hair Day books when they first came out some years ago before e-readers were ever thought of.( Also glad to see some of the other authors I use to read are coming back) I recommend this book to other cozy readers out there. Can't wait to see what's in store for Marla and Dalton and all the other characters in the upcoming book.
