I've used it a few times in the rain and when the rain is coming straight down it works great. However, if it's windy and the rain is coming down sideways expect to get some drops of rain falling in through the vents in the top. Not that big of a deal to get a couple of drops, but kind of surprising that it could get in. The vent flaps only overlap the umbrella about and inch or so compared to most vented umbrellas of this size that overlap about 3 or more inches. Maybe the shorter vents allow for better wind resistance, although I haven't used it enough to determine that yet. Overall I would say it is an average umbrella and seems to be sturdy.

It's nice looking and strong umbrella. But, after just several times use, the auto open and close didn't work any longer. I couldn't open or close it any more.

Nice looking and great without wind, but in a good wind, this one went inside out. Not what I was expecting considering what I paid for the umbrella. Disappointed.

I had a ShedRain mini that I was impressed with the quality but was just a bit too small. I decided to try this for not much more money and am very impressed with the improvement. It's not just a bit larger (but still, not too large), but quality of materials makes a big jump. Most significantly the large wooden handle is a joy to hold vs the small plastic knob on the mini. While the mini often inverted in the wind, this has yet to.
Update after many more months:
I used the umbrella on a strong windy day when I should not have, and it finally inverted. I then made the mistake of trying to force it closed. Several of the mechanism wires bent, so it rarely closes properly, with one or two flaps sticking out until you help it. So while I firmly believe it stands up to much stronger wind before inverting vs. the mini, I found the mini was never damaged by its inverting all the time.
Still, I've been thrilled with this umbrella and am ordering another.

It looks beautiful and feels sturdy (although I haven't tried in high winds yet).
A bit bigger then I wanted (for one slim person a 43 arc is perfect... this one is 46 arc, a bit bigger then I need). But closed, it's compact.
The only thing I miss here is the FRP (Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastic), which would make this model even more sturdy and resistant. For the same price range (34) you can get one with FRP.
Look ShedRain website to see the ones with FRP (models 2527 and 1760 seems good options, but I haven't bought it to test).
I just had a small issue when closing this umbrella... but it closed on the second attempt.

I purchased this supposedly well made umbrella since my husband only wanted a 'j handle' wooden umbrella. It was more than I usually spend on an umbrella but the ratings seemed to be very high. We recently had a thunderstorm with winds and as he was walking in the city it completely fell apart! I actually am going to contact the seller to see if there's anything I can do. Very disappointed!!

First of all, I wanted a golf-size automatic folding umbrella, like the previous one I used, I thought that 48" was already golf sized, but I was mistaken, so my mistake. 48" is only for personal use umbrellas.

The good:
- The mechanism is very good! It is extremely smooth to open and close. Great worksmanship!
- The fabric is excellent. Smooth and classy, and the color and texture is great!

The bad:
- The wooden handle is extremely easy to scratch. Every drop leaves a mark. It was beautiful to look at brand new, but in using it leaves white scratch marks against the lacquered handle.
- The vented canopy canopy design causes rain to drip in to you. In light drizzle, the umbrella operates nicely. But in heavier rain, the surface of the umbrella would get wet and when you hold the umbrella a little bit sideways, the rain from the outer portion would drip into the inside through the vents. This is extremely disappointing as I often get wet and would have to adjust to center my hold and prevent this drip. What the hell!!!

I needed a compact umbrella for an upcoming trip, and thought this looked well made and nice. When I received it, the quality was good. It seemed sturdy and I liked the wooden handle. Trying it out, it opened very easily by pushing the button.. push the button again, the canopy closes up, but you have to pull the shaft down to meet the handle. This is where I had a problem. The shaft wouldn't click into the handle, and it kept popping up. Also, I had to really pull it down hard.. it wasn't easy. I tried this about six times, still no good. I did get it to work eventually, but when I pushed the button to open again, the button was stuck. Maybe I just got a defective umbrella?.. but, I had to return it. I have it two stars, instead of one, because the umbrella wasn't flimsy. Too bad, I liked the look of the umbrella overall.

I've had this umbrella for over a month and I love it. Such style, fineness, and folds up very neatly. I use this umbrella during the day to protect myself from harmful UV-rays. I know there are UPF and anti-UV umbrellas out there, none of them are elegant or fold up neatly as ShedRain Umbrellas. I hope one day ShedRain will make a beautiful UPF umbrella!

I used to own this exact umbrella, and I used it for over 5 years until one of the metal folding arms broke. That umbrella was great! Unfortunately, and based on previous user's reviews I am not alone in my thinking, the new quality standard has been reduced drastically. I used my very recently purchased new replacement umbrella three times and it broke! I'll repeat that: I used my very recently purchased new replacement umbrella three times and it broke! It was opened and closed no more than 10 times, and the mechanism that smoothly opens and closes the umbrella is now malfunctioning to the severity that it can no longer be used. In addition to this, ShedRain has a miserable return policy, which is now consistent with their lack of quality control. DO NOT BUY THIS UMBRELLA. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the future disappointment, hassle, and theft, and go search for a Totes, Samsonite, or London Fog auto open/close umbrella. ShedRain is now garbage shell of what they once were.
