Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Shaw's anything but sheepish sheep are on the move again--this time by hoof. As with their previous misadventures ( Sheep in a Jeep ; Sheep in a Shop ), everything is just dandy at the start of their latest caper: "Morning's here! It's warm and clear! / Sheep load up their hiking gear." With packs on backs, the frisky flock trots along happily until the inevitable snags occur: "Trees and bushes soon grow thicker. / Where's the trail? Sheep bicker." Ears begin to droop as the woolly creatures make their way through thorns, prickers, fog and bog, and then--horrors of horrors--"The compass sinks. They're in dismay. / How can they ever find their way?" Of course, the ever-resourceful sheep manage to do just that--despite a final drenching rainfall. Though the antics will bring on chuckles, this latest effort lacks the comic fullness and laugh-out-loud visuals found in the best of Shaw and Apple's collaborations. Still, the light verse is as snappy as ever, and Apple's art contains her trademark details--including the dapper sheep's millinery and their delightfully emotive facial expressions. Ages 2-5.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Fans of Shaw's silly sheep will flock to this, their fifth woolly adventure. When Sheep Take a Hike, these intrepid explorers lose their way and wander through underbrush, fog, and a swamp. Cleverly, they keep their cool and follow the "woolly fuzz they left behind" to get back on the trail. Using her familiar short rhymes and rollicking rhythm, the author has written another surefire favorite for preschool story times and beginning readers. Apple's colored-pencil drawings add just the right balance between the seriousness, confusion, and humor the sheep experience. A rambunctious outing with riotous results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheep Take a Hike, October 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sheep Take a Hike (Hardcover)
This is another of the fantastic "Sheep" Books by Nancy Shaw. In this adventure the sheep go for a hike in the woods, lose the trail and then get lost. Do they find their way out of the forest? I love their surprising ending. I have loved following the five sheep and their seagull friend through their adventures. Young children who read with me love to look for the seagull, to spot the sheep with the knitting, and to find the rhymes on every page. The books are easy reading for the newest readers, with beautiful pictures on every page.

2.0 out of 5 stars ok buy why the theme of disasters?, November 17, 2009

This review is from: Sheep Take a Hike (Paperback)
the illustrations are nice. Not exactly realistic but clear and uncluttered, not an exagerated cartoonish style of so many children's books. the text and story line are creative. The rhyming and rhythem are fun. But why does everything always go wrong in these books? My son doesn't like them for this reason. All of the sheep books are theme he should like but he doesn't enjoy them at all because calamity after calamity and then the story ends. No fun times or successes. Problems, a few solutions and promlems. Nothing to attract him to the books. He does enoy stories where their is a problem or a challenge and then solutions. Anyway, I wish he like them because they are nicely illustrated and creative. Just too negative and a little scary. this review could be for any of the series, whether the jeep wrecks, the storm aboard ship and subsequent sinking of the ship (and why are they pirates?!), lost in the woods and rained on...etc!

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute, but dissapointing, June 11, 2007
This review is from: Sheep Take a Hike (Paperback)
Being avid hikers, we just HAD to buy this book after our Son fell in love with Sheep in a Jeep. Unfortunately, other than the general theme of misadventures of a group of kind spirited sheep friends...they had little in common. The rhyming scheme is loose and my son shows little interest in this book. I still plan to check out others of "the Sheep" series.
