Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1–3—A pun-filled tale with sheep that have names like Ewetopia, Ewecalyptus, and Ewetensil. Older children are more likely to appreciate the puns, while younger ones will simply enjoy the humor. All poor Ewetopia wants is to be noticed, and she gets her chance to shine when she is invited to the Woolyones' Ball. After trying on 57 costumes, she decides that dressing as a wolf will get her the most attention. With a sheep disguised as a wolf and a wolf as a sheep, trouble is sure to be right around the corner. The playful illustrations, suffused with expression and shades of pink, show sheep outfitted in tutus and an Elvis costume, and the wolf having a tantrum. Lester follows a familiar format in this clever tale, which would work well when compared to and contrasted with others that involve sheep and wolves.—Judy Chichinski, Skyline Elementary School, Tacoma, WA

Format: Hardcover
This was one of those fun little surprises found at the library. Ewetopia doesn't like her wool so she tries to dress up and dazzle the rams and shock the ewes. Nobody really notices.

She gets an invitation to the Woolyones' Costume Ball. Now here is her chance to outshine everybody. After a flurry of costumes she decides on a Wolf costume. Bad faux pas. Another sheep appears without a costume. Ewetopia tries to talk to him and discovers he is not a sheep!

This is a cute story that really works due to the artwork. The expressions of the sheep are spot on and the wolf is funny. My girl liked the story as I would figure she would since she is a fan of Tacky!

Ewetopia isn't comfortable in her own wool, and is determined to impress others - but all her attempts fall flat, until the Woolyones' Costume Ball arrives with a promise of fame in Helen Lester's The Sheep in Wolf's Clothing. She tries on over fifty costumes before she finds the perfect one - which seems to fall flat until a stranger brings a new dilemma to the ball. Lynn Munsinger's hilarious illustrations accent a fun take on the traditional Wolf story.

This was a fun book, though the humor was a little over my kids' heads. Fun read for the parents though!

This is a really sweet book. The illustrations are especially nice, and the story flows well. It's not the kind of book where you just sit in awe of how good it is, but it is definately a good one to have in your library. The names of the sheep alone win it an extra 1/2 star in my book :) 4 and a half stars! :)
