Sheer Plucks: Contemporary Solo Guitar Works

As time goes on, works that were at one point considered unplayable or avant garde have now entered into mainstream usage; such is the case with the Carter and Berio pieces. Other works such as Dillon or the Wourinen variations are less known, but excellent pieces. The playing on this cd is of consistently high quality and integrity. One of the best examples of modern works for classical guitar that I have heard, and far outranks playing such as David Starobin.

One of my favorites. I actually prefer Seelye's recording of Sequenza XI to Fisk's. Seelye's seems slightly more controlled, and while that can be a disadvantage in a piece that demands such intensity, I find that it opens up the piece, allows it an uncluttered balance that does not need excessive bangs and thumps to speak. I've made the difference between the two recordings sound larger than it actually is, but regardless of whether preference lies with Fisk or Seelye, this is still a very high quality recording. The Wuorinen piece premiered on this recording is exeptional writing that fits the instrument extremely well. Having heard this, I hope that Wuorinen will write more for the guitar.

This recording is very well done. Performers are different and they are going to play works differently. Variety is the spice of life right? Todd plays these works, all difficult with dedication and commmittment. This is difficult music and it commands the attention of the listener. If you want to see what the guitar is capable of, this work along with the works of David Starobin are must haves.
