Nancy as Torch Singer,
By Mike Morrison (Chatsworth, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sheet Music - Collection of Her Favorite Love Song (Audio CD)
Here's a wonderful collection of love songs with very little duplication from Nancy's earlier albums. No gags, no duets - just 65:18 of marvelous, wistful, loving songs in her typically simple arrangements. There are a couple of special treasures: "Flowers" - a Bobby Cole tune from 1970 - is a tour de force and short story all in about three and a half minutes. Nancy's cover of Jim Morrison's "Light My Fire" is marvelous and perfectly set toward the bottom of her smoky alto range. All in all, this is a terrific album.

I was greatly enamored with Nancy Sinatra in the late 1960s, mainly because she looked great in white go-go boots but also because my mother's favorite singer was Frank Sinatra and listening to Nancy allowed me to assert that she was the only decent singer in the family. When my father was stationed in Japan I can remember finding solace in the strange new world in which I had been dumped listening to "Some Velvet Morning" every time it came on Armed Forces Radio. My favorite Nancy Sinatra songs have always been her duets with Lee Hazzlewood, after which I liked her rock covers. So it is rather ironic that in this 1998 album "Sheet Music: A Collection of Her Favorite Love Songs," is that Nancy has put together 21 tracks where she is often singing songs in a style we would all associate much more with her father than the tunes on her greatest hits collection. The other great attraction here are the nine unreleased songs, featuring covers of songs by George Harrison ("Something"), Paul McCartney ("Maybe I'm Amazed"), and Ray Davies ("Tired of Waiting for Young"). On that last one the liner notes inform us that nobody remembers who produced and arranged the song or when it was recorded, so there was some serious cleaning out of the music vault for this one (Billy Strange did a lot of the arranging, but that song is clearly not in his style). There is a low keyed cover of "California Dreamin'" but the one I liked whas "When I Look In Your Eyes," which few would remember as being sung by Rex Harrison to a seal in "Dr. Doolittle" (the final lyric is rewritten). Add ot this another four singles, including "Nice 'n' Easy" and "True Love," and those who have all of Nancy Sinatra's albums are going to find that over half of the tracks on "Sheet Music" are "new." These songs are not for the casual Nancy Sinatra fan, but for those people who collected her albums in the Sixties, patiently waited for them to be remastered as DVDs, and even picked up a popular men's magazine simply because it had a pictorial spread of the woman in all her glory. This is not a great album but it is still a welcome addition to our Nancy Sinatra music library.

Classic Nancy in a romantic mood!,

This album as a whole is very slinky, romantic, and classy. Nancy sounds very relaxed and seductive on "Kind of a Woman" and "Kinky Love"--two tracks that should have been as big as her trademark, "Boots". All the tracks here, most previously unreleased, sound amazing. Lots of string arrangements, gorgeous backing vocals, and sensual lyrics. If you aren't already a major Nancy fan, this album will do the trick!!

Sheet Music is a gem.,

There are 21 tracks on this magnificent collection, most of them previously unreleased. Nancy tends to be pigeon-holed by her monster hits like BOOTS. This collection highlights the warmth and sensuality in her voice, and her under appreciated versatility. It is also one "..." of a sexy album. One song stands out for me, and that is the delightful jazzy EASY EVIL. Nancy's rendition of this song conjures up images of smoky clubs in exotic locations. It is nothing short of audio foreplay. This one should've been a number one. Criminal that it was previously unreleased. Next time you're in the mood for some hot and heavy romance, give the Johnny Mathis collection a rest and put SHEET MUSIC on instead. Watch for signs of meltdown though, because this album is HOT.

This CD is great because we get a chance for the first time to hear some of Nancy's unreleased music. So well worth the wait!! I especially enjoy this CD's version of "Kind Of A Woman". Different than the album's version - the flute adds so much!

Nancy with the Lovely Voice,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sheet Music - Collection of Her Favorite Love Song (Audio CD)
I always think of Nancy Sinatra as a special hidden treasure. The world knows her for all those hit records but most people have no idea what a technically excellent, rich-voiced, smartly interpretative singer she is. I've played this album for friends without identifying the singer. They say, "The girl is terrific," then are totally surprised when I reveal they are hearing Nancy Sinatra. Invariably people think of the tough chick from the first hit records, music they love by a singer they love. But they have no idea she has a much wider musical picture in her history. This is a wonderful album start to finish with intriguing songs, beautiful arrangements and a singer who is first-rate by any measure.

Nancy Sinatra gives us all she can and more on this fabulous CD. Along with previously released material comes a batch of UNreleased material heard for the first time on this album. Also, some previously unreleased on CD material that adds greatly to the love theme used on this album. Standout tracks include: the cute "Kind of A Woman," (different, better version than featured on her '70s album "Woman"); the sultry "Kinky Love," the lethargic, pleasing "Tired of Waiting" (with Lee Hazlewood); "Maybe I'm Amazed," and the pre-"Boots" Cole Porter cover of "True Love." Well worth the money with a great '70s pic of Nancy in a sexy pose on the back cover... Slip under the sheets and turn Nancy on...

Sinatra shines in mellow tones,
By Darryl Geddes (Syracuse, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sheet Music - Collection of Her Favorite Love Song (Audio CD)
If you can get passed Nancy Sinatra's cover of the Doors' classic "Light My Fire," which may make you grimace, this CD of Sinatra favorites, but not hits, is a passable, even delightful mellow album. Sinatra's voice, never big, is framed in perfect musical accompaniment here and she does well with her song selections. The artful arranging never taxes her vocal talent. Sinatra shows a more seductive self in this outing, much different from her defiant image she projected early on.
