This was a 'best kept secret' to me. I just recently learned of it and purchased the DVD. I am very impressed and give it my high recommendation. It was done by Bob Jones University Film Department approx 1977 but don't think that means 'amateurish.' This was probably done as very low-budget in comparison to Hollywood offerings but it is a labor of love and high quality in every respect. The script, directing, actors (both main and supporting), filming, score -- all of these are very well done. The true account of Robert Griffey's life from conversion as young man to old age and finally his death is inspiring. The film runs over 2-hrs and I watched it in segments -- like reading a really good book. A 'special features' bonus gives insight to the great lengths the crew went to in turning out this excellent film.

With gladness I add an 'amen' to the other reviews of this wonderful film about a 19th century circuit riding preacher. The very first part of the film (about Sheffey before his conversion) does have an amateurish quality, but as soon as it (quickly) gets into his mature life, the amateur feeling is gone. You really do get a sense of the hard life of a circuit rider (rural areas couldn't afford to support a permanent pastor) and what it was like at camp meetings. Some of the other preachers depicted in this film seem like the 'real deal' and not just actors playing a part. Brother Sheffey was a character and a shining example of what it means to be a Christian.

Modern viewers are numbed by the special effects, glitz & glamour of Holloywood productions, and "Sheffey" would give them reasons to scoff. But it is the message that hits home with the sincere viewer. The beautiful scenes of Tennessee and the Virginias serve as a most appropriate backdrop for the story of Robert Sheffey as presented by the Bob Jones University effort. And may this remastered DVD carry Sheffey's message as effectively to a new generation as the same message traveled through the mountains and valleys more than 100 years ago.

An excellent choice for a family movie night at church, school, or home.

There have been a lot of books written, movies made, stories told about great Preachers and Pastors of the days gone by, and this is one of the best. Sheffey is an ole time circuit Preacher that has a great effect on the lives of many people. For the good. This is a heart warming movie that follows the life of one of the greatest Country Preachers, doing all he can to be of help to others. Your heart will jump for joy, and your eyes will swell with tears, as you enjoy the movie Sheffy.
Please do order and enjoy the Ole Country Preacher Sheffy.
You will be glad you did. I was.

This is a fantastic movie. Although it was released in 1977, you would not know from the movie. The casting is superb and the scenery is breathtaking in the Appalachian Mountains. I originally saw this on a Christian movie channel about a month ago. My church has a dinner and a movie special on Friday nights and we were discussing future movie ideas. I suggested Sheffey and two others in the room said, "Absolutely". They watched the movie at the same time I did. We discussed some of the highlights of the movie with such passion that everyone insisted we watch it next. My children were inspired from the movie and asked lots of thought provoking questions. It is wonderful to spend quality time with family discussing Christian and family values, the enduring love of our Savior, and how all families and people are not perfect. But while we all fall short, only through caring and loving individuals such as Sheffey, do we manage to get through this life on earth with promise.

Sheffey is a man who makes it his life mission to help others. He speaks (not really preaches) to anyone who will come to his tent revivals, to anyone along a trail, at someone's home, and even travels great distances by horse while old and sick to help those in need. This is a true story and extremely inspirational. I highly recommend it for those who appreciate good Christian films.

This is a good family movie that I welcome on my Bible shelf for all to see. I gave this review four stars because it left out so many important points of Sheffey's life. Sheffey did not like to read and he did not like to study, which accounts for many of his religious choices, but he was a man of great prayer, something rarely seen in today's Christian world. I like to show this movie to young adults to emphasize great prayer and great faith. I then followup with a Bible study on what a person is required to do to become a Christian, which was left out of the story so it would appeal to a broader audience.

Even though it was originally made like 30 years ago, this is still a great movie perfect for Christian homes. It inspires you to live as close to God as Rev. Sheffey did. Highly recommended for any true Christian who wants to feel uplifted.
