4.0 out of 5 stars Swing and Sweet February 24, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Tommy Dorsey's big band was both swinging and sweet, which is probably a mixed blessing for todays music fans: this collection of 1944 (and, in the case of "Dinah", 1943) radio performances mixes sweet dance and some hot swing licks, thus making the CD ideal for nostalgiacs, but not necessarily for jazz fans.

However, as Scott Yanow points out in the liner notes, these tracks are from the period the band was not commercially recorded (the famous recording strike of the 40s), so it's very interesting to hear these tracks from the historical perspective as well...
The first 6 numbers have a line-up boasting Pete Candoli (tp),Buddy DeFranco (cl), Al Klink (ts), Dodo Marmarosa (p) and Gene Krupa (dm), all of whom have their spots (TD's trombone is also heard).
Track 7 is from a different session, with solo spots for Heinie Beau (cl), Don Lodice (ts) and Condoli (tp).
The rest of the CD has Buddy Rich on drums and an OK vocal by Bonnie Lou Williams on "I'm Nobody's Baby".
Other vocals, scattered throughout the CD (by Bob Allen and by the Sentimentalists, a female vocal quartet, are less appealing). As for the strings, featured prominently on some tracks, they range from surprisingly functional (on the first session) to irritating (on "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", where they completely choke/smother Dorsey's lyrical performance)....

All in all, this CD is a very nice and enlightening piece of jazz/pop/swing history; it's a pity there's no complete listing of musicians for each session (the data I've given are from Yanow's well written although a bit too benevolent liner notes)...
