4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, pure voice
A wonderful singer from the sixties. Her voice is pure as Baez, but has a better range. My only criticism is that the backup music in some of the songs is unnecessary and detracts from her performance. All she needs is a guitar.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shelby shall be shared
Shelby Flint was a of a time, as she sung "Far Away Places". She was of early '60's Folk, one of a few that got a top 30 hit, "Angel on My Shoulder". Shelby was not "folky" enough for the college kids discovering Bob Dylan and not NEARLY cool enough to be Joan Baez. Shelby did not influence any adolescent/young woman to grow long hair and iron it. She had pitch perfect...

4.0 out of 5 stars Totally Pure...., December 20, 2005
This review is from: Shelby Flint/Shelby Flint Sings Folk/Cast Your Fate to the Wind (Audio CD)
Shelby has a voice much like Alison Krauss in the sense that you will NEVER hear such a smooth voice with such a beautiful sound. While these albums do sound dated compared to the other folk stuff that was being released around the time, they make a great snapshot of a time and place when this music was totally accepted. "Angel On My Shoulder", which made the top 30, is about as sweet and mellow as you can ask for, but it has an innocence which you won't find anywhere else.

The other highlight for me is the version that Shelby presents of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". It starts out nice and soft, but once the brass kicks in, it soars off the edge and into the horizon. Absolutely fantastic.

...This compilation is great for all the pre-teens from the early sixties ... those of us that only used the natural drugs of life and love. Brings back lots of memories ... the welcome warmth of her voice is reassuring...Great memories...

4.0 out of 5 stars She influenced Joni Mitchell & impressed Leonard Feather..., April 26, 2005

We were so young & naive then... and doggone it shows up, still, to remind us, these many years since.

Shelby's voice was so pure - not quite a Joan Baez, but in the '60s "folk music" to us meant roots, and was so often (as so much else was, in a "covered" fashion) white. Well, European roots, okay? These 3 albums of hers influenced a lot of us young folk singers/writers. That purity inspired us, made us somehow think we could someday soar high... naturally. Yeah.

Well, some of the people she impressed were Leonard Feather, the legendary jazz critic, and ...drumroll... Joni Mitchell. In a 1995 Mirabella magazine interview with the esteemed rock critic Ken Tucker, Joni gave Shelby the ultimate compliment when asked about her own influences. Joni simply said, "I started off copying a girl named Shelby Flint...."

You listen to Shelby now and you thank the goddesses and gods no one produces folk music using so much strings these days, else we'd all be diabetics dying of sweetness. But I guess, for some, folk music meant sweetness and lite.

Worth buying anyway, just to hear a voice like that... and for the ageless, pure, young-girl's innocence of "Angel On My Shoulder."

Shelby Flint was a pop singer with a soft, crystalline voice, with virtually no vibrato (in that sense much like the young Jo Stafford). As such, the folk songs on this set are really pop covers, and done superbly. My only complaint with this otherwise excellent compilation (and there will almost certainly never be another one) is the omission of several singles that did not appear on albums, most notably "Joy In The Morning" b/w "Lonely Cinderella." (Valiant 716, from 1965.) "Joy" is from the Richard Chamberlain movie of the same name. Shelby's stunning recording of this song was pulled almost immediately, before I could buy the 45, and I've never actually seen the single, although DJ copies must exist as I heard it a few times on radio. (If anyone has it, PLEASE let me know!) My suspicion is that Chamberlain, whose single came out at the same time, had an exclusive right to the song. As to this collection, if you are a fan of Shelby Flint and early 1960's pop, and songs such as "Angel On My Shoulder," "I Will Love You," and "Cast Your Fate To The Wind," buy it now before it disappears forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rescuers soundtrack, January 22, 2007

I was interested in Shelby Flint after seeing her name on the credits as the singer on the soundtrack of the original Rescuers Disney animated movie, do yourself a favour & get the movie too & watch it just to hear Shelby sing.

I do wish Shelby Flint had more albums! I heard one of her songs years and years ago when I bought a 45 of hers by mistake. I never regreted it and never forgot her either. I would recommend ANY album of hers without reservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars some memories are just worth saving, October 23, 2009

I was in a little shop when I heard an old but very pretty song that came on. I hadn't heard it since I was a child and it brought back some very fond memories of my mom. After much searching I discovered it was the song "Angel on my shoulder" from Shelly Flint. My mom use to sing it and she past away when I was only 13years. I bought the CD simply because of this song but when I played it I realized there were other beautiful songs like "Hi-lilly Hi-low", "Gonna get along without you now", and a few others. Some memories are just worth saving :)
