Not what I expected either. Not enough detail how to actually build the shelf work, or instructions, lots of water colored pictures with no dimensions. Some actual photos of work being completed would have been better. I wish i had ordered the benchwork or building double decker book instead.

And one more thing, how come amazon prices are so much better than whats on kalbach's website? I mean, i have a sub to their magazine, and they still cant offer you decent prices on their books

I expect more out of Kalmbach books than this. I expected much more in-depth design and construction guidance than this book offers. Much of what is found here can be found on the internet or in Model Railroader Magazine articles. Kalmbach books are expensive and I expect my money's worth when I buy one. This book did not meet my expectations at all!

This book failed to deliver an in-depth look at designing shelf layouts as I had hoped for. . . The basics:(width & height of a layout, basic types of benchwork, etc.,) have been covered everywhere before, and essentially no new ideas are to be had in this 86 pg soft-cover book. What is covered doesn't have enough details to be useful for a beginner in the hobby, nor of any appreciable value to an experienced model railroader, either. Quite disappointed, but really not surprised, as this book is typical of Kalmbach Publishing's efforts of late, as it's essentially a rehash of old Model Railroader magazine articles, w/ little or no new material, and considerably over-priced for what the reader gets. The author (Iain Rice) is far more capable than what he's achieved w/ this particular book.

This book was good, but not up to the superb standards that you ususally find in a Kalmbach product. There are very few photos of actual shelf layouts. Most are illustrations that are more theory than what works. I would have prefered to see more of real layouts. All in all, it is a good book and worth the price, but I think it would have been better if it had more construction and less theory.

I was really disappointed in this book. I thought I would get a lot of information and step by step building instructions. This book barely gives you information on shelf layouts. It mostly shows off the writers oil paintings of layouts. Not worth the money. Look online for shelf layouts and save your money for materials.

My title sums up the problem with this very small booklet. It has great birds-eye views of the plans. But if you are looking for details concerning the actual designs... forget this. Just look around on the internet. It does have some good pointers, especially concerning height of shelving.

Mediocre book @ an inflated price - typical of Kalmbach Publishing. A rehash of older magazine articles, and lacks real substance. The material in this book could have been handled in a single chapter in another book. Quite disappointing, overall.

I bought this because I have wanted to build a model railroad but have little space available, so I have decided to build a double track around my living room, this book gave a lot of good ideas and also pointed out a lot of restrictions to the plan I wanted to do before, I got myself stuck. recommend!
