3.5 Stars. A surprisingly good game.,

This review is from: Shell Shock: Nam '67 (Video Game)
The Vietnam War seems to be the subject of quite a few games latley. Men of Valor and Battlefield: Vietnam are two entrys into the shooter genre. Now fledgling developer Guerrilla games from The Netherlands have given us the game Shellshock: Nam 67 as thier first official release prior to thier highly anticipated game Killzone later this year. And though not perfect, Shellshock is an entertaining game in it's own right.
In Shellshock: Nam '67 you play a green G.I., newly arrived in the Nam. The game centers around your character as you battle the North Vietnamese Army in a variety of locations (swamp, rice pattys, villages). You also have to make "moral descisions" in the game. Situations arise where you have to make descisions which may affect the outcome of the game. The gameplay is fairly good. It tends to get a bit repetitive but there's enough variety here to keep you interested. The NVA are a challenging enemy at times. They will regroup and adjust position according to your actions. Though the enemy A.I. is spotty at times, the game is never too easy. There are also sub goals during missions. One of them is to defuse booby traps. Something I have yet to do sucessfully. The enemys are surprisingly tough. It takes quite a few bullets to put them down. There's an interactive Base Camp where you can talk to your fellow soldiers as well as upgrade some of your weapons. Some may be dissapointed with the lack of an online component but it really wouldn't give you anything different than countless other games already include. The graphics while not great are very condusive to the game's environment. The graphics have a grainy texture to them. This is to replicate the feel of a 1960's Vietnam newsreal. One of the things that happens quite often is that the enemy will blend in well with the background making them hard to see. This is intentional I'm guessing. One of the things that struck me as unusual was the movements of the non-player characters. They looked at times like they were skating across the gamescape. Your character moves a little stiff at times but as the game progresses you get used to it. The sounds on this game are very good. Alot of period music is used to give the game more historical context. The NVA will curse you out as your fighting them. Your squadmates are very vocal as well and the weapon sounds are very good. This is good sounding game. The controlls are a little stiff. It takes about 45 minutes to become accustomed to the control scheme. But once you start blasting it's hard to stop. Some things like switching weapons is still a little tricky but there's a quick switch that compensates for it. I have to say that I didn't expect much from this game. But when you get a few levels deep, it does become rather addictive. Though I wouldn't pay $49.99 for it, I most likely would pay $19.99 for it. My best advice is to give it a rental first.

Let me address one of the reviewers who made some complaints. First, yes their are sexual themes, but thats the way it was there. And your right, the characters have no "valor", but once again, both sides did bad things in the war (although the V.C. did much worse things). Now with that out of the way, let me say, the first part of the game was great! The enemy did not die with one shot. No they were extremely hard to kill. It took several shots, especially with a machine gun, but not so many with a rifle, to kill them. The levels were pretty realistic. But the game took a step backwards with your promotion to special forces. You take on impossible missions, but they really aren't that impossible. There are also a lot of things to do back a the base. This is a fun game that is worth getting.

In my own lame opinion I think this is the best "VEITNAM" video game to hit the scene. Out of the other three Nam games Playstation has right now I would have to say this is the best of the best regardless what these other guys, or gals will tell you. I loved it from begining to end, and of course I had to play it on hard-core. lets face it. The only real reason to buy a war video game is so that we can blow the crap out of the enemy, and let me tell you this is the game to do so. I mean arms, legs, and heads are rolling in this baby. Lots of blood & gore just how I like it. So get out there and rent it! See for yourself, and stop asking for other peoples advise. It's a great war game, and one of the best. Lots of weapons and lots of fun. If you love the real horror of war this is the game for you. Oh and wait untill you get the poontang pass. Remeber the hooker in Full Metal Jacket.
Very cooool Game - Go Get it now!!!!

OK, take a deep breath. It's only a video game. Alright, my heartbeat is back to normal.
What an intense game. The moment you start to panic from the chaotic gunfire is the moment in which you'll be restarting the mission due to your death and cowardice. I started on the normal difficulty level, but I had to resort to easy after five missions because they were tough. It's ok though; that just gives it great replay value. The controls are easy to learn and the environments are great, even though they're interactive. The enemy AI is relentless and great, except for occasional enemy saying "you go home in body bag" after I've shot their head off. I'm not quite sure if the team I'm fighting with can die or not. I've accidentally shot them point blank in the head and all they say is "watch where you're shooting". This could be a good or a bad thing. There's been a few times when I was too chicken and hiding behind a rock because of the heavy ammo flying around while boys were playing Rambo and getting waxed...but still not quite dying. The only thing I don't like about the game is the inability to save anywhere. This game desperately needs it. It took me over an hour to complete a mission. It was late. I just wanted to finish the dog gone level, save it, brush my teeth, and go to bed. For that reason, I would give it 4 1/2 stars. Are you thinking about buying that used copy of No One Lives Forever you saw at the video game store? Think again. Just read any of my reviews and you will understand just how sorry that game is.

So, I just finished watching "We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson, turned on the PS2 and popped in my copy of Shell Shock Nam '67.
What a great transition! It's just like being in the movie. Don't pay any attention to the few negative reviews. I've played all the 'Nam games for PS2 and many FSP's and this is a winner! Bloody, yes, but so is war. I get so tired of people using this forum to so quickly complain about every little detail of a game. IT'S A GAME. If you like war games and shooters, lock and load, and Enjoy! Five Stars!!!!

A Kid's Review
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Shell Shock: Nam '67 (Video Game)
I make two reviews per game, one after i begin it and,two when i finish it.
Here are ShellShock:`Nam `67(SSN67) details. CONSOLES:PC,PlayStation 2 & XBox. RELEASE:2004(quite young) RATINGS:ESRB(M-Mature),BBFC=18+,PEGI=18 CONTENTS:PEGI=Violence,Bad Language,Sextual themes and horror aspects. QULIFYABLE FOR PLATINUM:No,i don`t think so,usually good games released a year before, go PLATINUM it apparently never hit sales of over 1 million copies sold. This game is good but nothing great,Its a Military War-shooter/RPG so you are shooting, doing mission objectives when on a mission, when you have freetime, you are at a U.S. Army Base Camp and you could exchange weapons, listen to the DJ spin you a `60s song,or make announcements,or you could meet a hucker and shakk up with her in her bedroom, the sameway you do in GTA:Vice City except you don`t pick her up in a car,you meet her(this Sextual content is CENSORED,you here them but do not see them) or you could buy someit off that guy,or just talk to soldiers/nurses who are off duty. CHARACTERS: YOUR SOLDIER:Yes a future VietNam veteran who has been drafted to fight the VC/NVA communists soldiers, oddly enough he never speaks, just like FIDO in GTAIII does not even mumble,or scream at pain,i heard he never sleeps or eats, one weird guy. Lt. O`Brien: Your beginning leader,he leads you until is death, that ofcoarse is when a Nam VC shoots him. GARDNER:He is there until Mission 2 where he acts tough at the beginning of a mission and runs a head of you but when you and the platoon reach the swamp,he ends here,he walks into a V.C. booby trap,(Well he steps onto the SPIKEWALL "button" and it as quick as lightning swings out a pine wall with knives stickin` out and he gets stabbed). GUNNER:he is your Special Forces promotor and MENTOR he teaches you stealth and gives you a new uniform and a CQC knife to slit throats,he dies after you blow up some tank when he gets rocketed before entering a Army chopper. Tick Tock:Ramirez`s(AKA Gunner) best friend he is after Gunner on the S.F. thing. He dies with Gunner PHYCHO: He lives up to his name he is on his way to the `Nam he talks about killing his enemies,on two occasions he executes his prisoner; The first one XEQts is a V.C. soldier who he kicks while that soldier is begging "Please Not hurt me,please no" Phych kicks him to the ground angrilly, for shooting their chopper down he shoots the VC in the head. The 2nd time he has a woman VC in a knife-chokehold interigating her "She tells him where two G.I. are" after she spits the info. out he slits her throat anyway. His death comes when he gets a knife thrown at his chest, and begging you to shoot him to avoid the VC plessuring his death, before you can he gets rocketed to bits. SHORTIMIMER: a kid who is behind you at missions. We don`t know what happens after the end. Missions similarities: the missions are long enough and fun,but not enough of them i completed this game in approximately 3 days, playing after school, and alday to they infact i only finished it half an hour ago(total hours approximately:25 hours altogether) there are 12 missions five as a rookie and 7 as a S.F. Soldier. The one where you have to kill Diem the VC general "the executioner/King Kong" is very similar to killing Diaz in GTA:Vice City hense the similar name,in GTAVC you have to brak into Diaz`s mansion kill his bodyguard gang and kill him,and then a movie comes up where Diaz is uncontious on the floor and Vercetti and Lance both put pistols to his head,BOOM he is dead,In SSN67 when you kill the VC soldiers you then eliminate Dian it shows your charicter and your platoon with Dian on a table, uncontious then your soldier takes out a Machetti and slices him into pieces. ENVIRONMEENT:Environments are nice, the jungle is okay war-torn streets are good,Basecamp is realish the two indoor levels POW castle and horehouse are very un-detailed but okay. The environment is always Hostile on missions,But since Dian love execution,he leave dead boddies on the floors, hangs corpses on trees and buildings, sticks his victims heads` on poles etc. overall is a good game very gritty graphics for the violent themes sake but too short,if they make another ShellShock make more missions I`m am going to trade it in and buy another game with its £8 i might get,i would keep it but i won`t play it again and it will dust to the back of my shelves. But i am not angry with the game or hate it i liked it but its a game that i`d finish and never play it,because its not really an addictive game not like MGS serieas,i got it in a 2 for £20 offer in GameStation UK with Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater(a better game in my opinion ) but since i have lended out MGS3 to someone wants to try it so imy favorate game had to be ShellShock:nAM 67 THIS WEEKEND.But i am not angry about finishing it there are plenty of iother military bases games ot there i am going to try whether its Third Person Shooter of First Person Shooter i would like to try these series; The CONFLICT series. The GHOST RECON series The SOCOM series MEDAL OF HONOR series CALL OF DUTY Series BROTHERS IN ARMS series. I will try them all but i have my eye on the TPS games(third person shooter) game as the three i mentioned all have squad in teractivivities Squad Control:Is when you can switch to a teammate in your platoon for a certain job he/she could be aquired to(i.e. Sniper,CQC expert, bomb defusal ect. ShellShock does not have squad interativities. Squad Command:You are one soldier but you can give orders to your team platoon. SSN67 may not have any sort of Squad control/command like its rivals but your team was still quite useful, they cover you during an objective, but CAN`T die, unrealistic but its useful. Bye. now try this game of any game series i mentioned if you like military games.

A Bit Shallow,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Shell Shock: Nam '67 (Video Game)
This game has riveting action and does attempt to convey the feeling of being in the middle of the Vietnam war. What prevents it from being excellent is that it tends to be repetitive. For instance, the mission where you enter the temple to kill the hated VC general is overwrought - it's the same type of firefight over and over again. The enemy AI is good, not spectacular; they tend to march forward in a line like zombies. There were too many times when I just got tired of killing enemies. It requires some creative thought, not alot. If your only going to play one Vietnam game, play the Conflict version instead.

First of all DON'T COMPARE this game with Socom Navy Seals, Metal Gear Solid, Splintercell and Medal of Honor BECAUSE YOU WILL HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here are my points: * The controls are easy to get used to them but you have to give it a day. * GREAT graphics (very realistic). * This game is MUCH better than Vietnam Conflict (another game), Vietnam Conflict is more real and strategical but the game is slow, very complicated and the graphics are not good. * ACTION PACKED FROM THE BEGINNING TO FOWARD, daylight and night-time missions, jungle and city missions and stealth missions. * Honestly ,the game itself is VERY SIMILAR to Medal of Honor except for the "fisrt-person shooting", this time is "second-person shooting" like in Socom Navy Seals. P.S: Watch this movies so you can fell INSPIRED!! while playing this game: Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and Apocalipse Now. Especially Apocalipse Now!!!!!!!!!!! ADIOS

I waited almost 4 months for this game and come to find out the missions suck and the so called "true war" experiance was about the most "untrue war" experiance I have had from any game. The only mission that was any good was the forth where you have to rescue the POW's. They also say that "Each mission should range from 45 to 65min in length". 10 mins on each mission is more like it! and on the subject of missions 11 only i thought it was going to be 14? terrible game, if you want to get it try renting it first you will save a few bucks!
