4.0 out of 5 stars Who cares if it's true or not?
This book is one of the most entertaining autobiographies I have ever read. I have heard many reviews saying how this book is full of lies, etc, but I didn't care. One of the first things Ms. Winters writes in the book is that this was her life how SHE remembers it, and that it may not be all correct, but people remember things the way they want. Take this as truth or...

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst book I've ever read (or tried to read)
I wondered what book the other reviewers had read to be giving it 4 or 5 stars & then I noticed that the first reviewer stated "Who cares if it's true or not?" This is the heart of my problem with the book. I like reading bios & autobiographies & I expect a little untruth here & there but this book reads like it is complete fiction. I almost felt sorry for Winters that...

4.0 out of 5 stars Who cares if it's true or not?, April 24, 2000

This book is one of the most entertaining autobiographies I have ever read. I have heard many reviews saying how this book is full of lies, etc, but I didn't care. One of the first things Ms. Winters writes in the book is that this was her life how SHE remembers it, and that it may not be all correct, but people remember things the way they want. Take this as truth or fiction; either way it is a great look at a young girl's rise to fame in 1940s and 50s Hollywood. It gave me insight into the post-war Hollywood machine, and what it was like to be an up-and-comer surrounded by these big-name stars. Ms. Winters' style is casual, as if she was writing it to each reader personally. If any of this interests you, definatly get your hands on a copy.

My wife read me parts of this book while we were driving on a long trip. I found it very entertaining and well written, and am surprised that it is out of print already. One may not agree with her opinions and lifestyle, but she's had an interesting life doing it HER way, and is one helluva good writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shelley had quite a life, December 4, 1999
By
Quite an interesting autobiography, not like any ive ever read. I just picked it up at the thrift store, what the heck. It was only $.20. She was quite promiscuous, though i must say, coming from a different lifestly and point-of-view on things, she was very casual about her acqauntances. Maybe im just old-fashioned, but i thought most of it was repelling. But interesting life, nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding show-biz memoir, January 15, 2006
Shelley Winters was one of the most outstanding character actresses of her generation. She was also a human - being of tremendous warmth, ambition, and moxie. In this chronicle of her early years she tells the story of her professional and personal life with a great deal of zest and flavor. She will not get an A for personal modesty or keeping the strictures of traditional morality, but she does get an A as being a person of great insight and caring for others. The story of her first marriage and those early years I found moving and sad.
A person who seemed to entertain in whatever she did-she provides here too a very entertaining piece of literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars RIP, January 17, 2006

A bigger than life talent, Ms. Winters was a mammoth personality. This biography successfully chronicles her many tastes and serves up a piping hot tribute to her gargantuan film legacy. Ms. Winters suffered no fools and hated juvenile attempts at humor. For that, I will always remember her fondly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shelley also known as Shirley, March 5, 2009
This review is from: Shelley Also Known As Shirley (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read this book so many times I cant even begin to count. Its old Hollywood at its finest, all the actors and events. I had to buy another copy as my first 2 were worn out. Shelley kisses and tells on everyone. I highly recommend this for those who remember classic Hollywood.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Disappointed, April 30, 2006
I found Ms. Winters can write as well as she can act. I felt badly for her father. Her family was a great support to her.

I almost felt sorry for Winters that she seemed to need to make up such stuff to make herself sound interesting. If you want fiction this book is fine. But anything related to the truth? I'd find another book. Really just reads like a bunch of made up stories with celeb names thrown into the mix. Funny thing she did have some talent in the acting field. I turned to the last page of the book to see if she would admit this was a work of fiction. She does say things were written as wanted to remember them. So... I couldn't make it all the way through the book , I felt like I was being lied to the whole time... but if you don't mind fiction in the form of an auto maybe it could be your cup of tea.
