Book Description

February 2006 4 and upP and up
When first published in 1989, "Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle" was one of the first children's books about AD/HD. Ever since, it has been a favourite among children, families, teachers, and therapists who all seem to enjoy the antics of this impulsive, wiggly, and mischievous turtle. This is a new second edition which features an updated storyline, and some adorable new illustrations. The cover is new as well, showing Shelley atop his skateboard. The story follows Shelley through some bumpy times at school, on the bus, and with other kids. His worried mother takes him to the doctor, where she and Shelley answer a lot of questions about his behaviour, and he plays with puzzles and blocks - activities that a child would typically experience during an AD/HD evaluation. After Shelley is diagnosed, the doctor recommends therapy and medication to help control his AD/HD. "Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle" continues to be a popular, reassuring story for young children who are going through the diagnostic process or who are having problems behaving at school or making friends because of AD/HD. It is for ages 3 to 7 years.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Shelley's story helps children and adults recognize and better understand the behaviors that are characteristic of ADHD." -- NewsLine (Federation for Children with Special Needs), Spring/Summer 2006

"The positive illustrations and the text will help a child with AD/HD understand that some children have more trouble being quiet and still..." -- CAPHIS Consumer Connections

From the Publisher

A review... "If you have wanted to explain to your ADHD child what hyperactivity is all about, but didn't know where to begin, Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle is a good place to start. Deborah Moss combines understandable text with colorful illustrations to describe the woes of Shelley, a young hyperactive turtle who gets in trouble on the school bus, in the classroom and everywhere. His parents finally take him to the doctor who examines him, explains to him that he is hyperactive and prescribes medicine and counseling to help him. Shelley ends up happier and healthier with a better understanding of himself and improved self-esteem.

Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle seems to be just what parents need to explain ADHD to their preschool or primary grade youngster. Whether parents read the story to their child, or whether it is enjoyed by the child alone, Shelley has a lot to offer." --The CHADDer Box, January 1990 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for explaining ADHD to siblings or ADHD child, April 2, 1998
Being a parent of an ADHD child can be difficult. Sometimes it is almost impossible to put into the right words what is going on with your child. This is even more difficult when explaining it to children. Shelley is a wonderful character created by Ms. Moss and charmingly animated by Ms. Schwartz. It puts the explanation of ADD/ADHD within the grasp of young children. It also allows for open discussion with them on a simple level. This particular book is staying in my children's library and I recommend to other parents who have ADHD children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Children With ADHD, November 23, 2000
By
Christy Riddell (Oak Hill, WV USA) - See all my reviews
This book was valuable to me in two aspects. Both as a student and as a mother. I recently received my BS in Psychology. My core study was in childhood ADHD. This book helped me to understand the disorder from the child's standpoint. I also found it helpful it as a mother. My 6-year-old son was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago. The first time we read the book together, he looked at me with tears in his eyes and said "Mommy, that's me!" I would recommend this book to anyone who has a small child with this disorder. With my son's permission, I shared the book with his kindergarten class and it helped them to understand him a little better. My son loves this book. It assures him that he is not bad or strange. . . just a little more "wiggly and jumpy," as Ms. Moss put it, than other children.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a very appropriate book that describes ADHD, January 12, 2001
By A Customer
I loved this book and so did my children who all have ADHD. It was extremely helpful. My children were so relieved to find out that they were not alone in their feelings, and that their was someone out there who they could relate to. They love this book and it has generated many questions from them. This book is appropriate for many ages. I gave itto my children's teachers, who requested a book that was appropriatefor the classroom and once they read it, they wanted to order theirown copy. It is child friendly ad very well illustrated. It is gentlenatured and informative. It allows your child to actually understandwhat is going on with them. This is a good book, that your child willask you to read it again and again.
