5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for explaining ADHD to siblings or ADHD child

3.0 out of 5 stars This was not a good fit for our situation
This is a good book and has a good message but is not the right book for my son. He is a 1st grader and recently diagnosed ADHD. And even after extensive testing they say he is borderline and is only a 50/50 chance that is what is causing his lack of attention. Hard to tell if he is just a high energy boy who is young for his grade and therefore a little more imature...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for explaining ADHD to siblings or ADHD child, April 2, 1998
This review is from: Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle (Special Needs Collection) (Hardcover)
Being a parent of an ADHD child can be difficult. Sometimes it is almost impossible to put into the right words what is going on with your child. This is even more difficult when explaining it to children. Shelley is a wonderful character created by Ms. Moss and charmingly animated by Ms. Schwartz. It puts the explanation of ADD/ADHD within the grasp of young children. It also allows for open discussion with them on a simple level. This particular book is staying in my children's library and I recommend to other parents who have ADHD children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Children With ADHD, November 23, 2000
By
Christy Riddell (Oak Hill, WV USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle (Special Needs Collection) (Hardcover)
This book was valuable to me in two aspects. Both as a student and as a mother. I recently received my BS in Psychology. My core study was in childhood ADHD. This book helped me to understand the disorder from the child's standpoint. I also found it helpful it as a mother. My 6-year-old son was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago. The first time we read the book together, he looked at me with tears in his eyes and said "Mommy, that's me!" I would recommend this book to anyone who has a small child with this disorder. With my son's permission, I shared the book with his kindergarten class and it helped them to understand him a little better. My son loves this book. It assures him that he is not bad or strange. . . just a little more "wiggly and jumpy," as Ms. Moss put it, than other children.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a very appropriate book that describes ADHD, January 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle (Special Needs Collection) (Hardcover)
I loved this book and so did my children who all have ADHD. It was extremely helpful. My children were so relieved to find out that they were not alone in their feelings, and that their was someone out there who they could relate to. They love this book and it has generated many questions from them. This book is appropriate for many ages. I gave itto my children's teachers, who requested a book that was appropriatefor the classroom and once they read it, they wanted to order theirown copy. It is child friendly ad very well illustrated. It is gentlenatured and informative. It allows your child to actually understandwhat is going on with them. This is a good book, that your child willask you to read it again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for the Classroom!!!, December 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle (Special Needs Collection) (Hardcover)
Shelley, The Hyperactive Turtle is a great book for the classroom. It helps children to understand the symptoms of ADHD, and children with ADHD are able to relate to the story and see that other children feel frustrated too. I used this book in a college presentation for a class called exceptional children and youth. My teacher and I loved it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for ADHD kids!, February 9, 2004

This book has been a wonderful resource in helping my 5 year old understand himself. He does not have ADHD, but rather suffers from other neuro-biological behavioral disorders which cause him to be very hyperactive and impulsive. We've read this book many times, and each time he seems to understand a little better that his "wiggles" are not his fault and that we love him just the same!

I highly recommend this book for those parents struggling to explain to their young child what makes them different from others. It's been a fantastic way to "work" with our son in a lighthearted way!

5.0 out of 5 stars For both parents and children who wish to understand ADHD, February 7, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle (Special Needs Collection) (Hardcover)
Even after visits with a psychologist and a complete assesment of my child, I was still in denial. After reading Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle, I realized that Shelly and my child were having the same problems and suffered daily with the same misunderstanding from those around them. Shelley teaches that ADHD is not a major problem, but society has a problem with ADHD and the child is not truely a fault. It helps your child (and you) understand the problem a deal with it effectively.

4.0 out of 5 stars ADHD and Helping A Young Child Understand, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle (Special Needs Collection) (Hardcover)
Shelly the Hyperactive Turtle helped my daughter understand why she was missing information and instructions. My daughter may not like taking her medication, but now she understands that there are others like her who need something to slow them down a little so they don't miss the little details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't sure, January 14, 2007
This review is from: Shelley, the Hyperactive Turtle (Special Needs Collection) (Hardcover)
I wasn't sure about the book because it was written so long ago. Boy was I wrong! The book is applicable today just as it was when it was written. My son is 7 (almost 8) and we have put off explaining a lot of ADHD to him until he could understand it. We decided this was the time so we looked for books. This one jumped out at us due to the high ratings. When we got the book we read it to ourselves first to see if it was appropriate for our son. We could relate to almost everything in the book! We decided to read it to our son along with out daughter (10) and our other son (5) and surprisingly, after reading it even our 5 yr old seems to understand a bit more about why his older brother does the things he does. Also, he teacher was interested in the book and bought one for herself. It helps her explain things to the entire class which helps all ADHD children feel less "left out."

Wonderful book!

3.0 out of 5 stars This was not a good fit for our situation, April 14, 2008

This is a good book and has a good message but is not the right book for my son. He is a 1st grader and recently diagnosed ADHD. And even after extensive testing they say he is borderline and is only a 50/50 chance that is what is causing his lack of attention. Hard to tell if he is just a high energy boy who is young for his grade and therefore a little more imature. Time will tell.

But again this book didn't fit for us so I never ended up reading to him. He is doing great academically and socially. Only issue is with sitting still and getting independent work done. And with this book I didn't want to introduce him to the idea or worry of other potential problems that aren't part of his experience.

Still trying to find a book for children that introduces the concept and basic ideas about AD/HD without seeming like the child is doing something bad or something is wrong with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for introducing ADHD to your child, December 31, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This is a great book to use as a discussion springboard. My daughter immediately identified with the "Hyperactive Turtle" in the book. The discussions that followed the reading of the book were priceless. This also helped her understand that she was not the only kid with ADHD. I would suggest this book for kids ages 6 to 9 and for reading with a parent. The book is an easy read for a child, but the parent's involvement is crucial as there will most likely be plenty of questions! This is a good thing!
