This book has only some examples of shelter dogs who become part of a family. Zorro,Kirby,Ian,Tracker, and Joey are some of the characters, or dogs, in this wonderful book. Kirby is a westie who's owner died. Kirby was left alone in his house without food or water for seven days before he was discovered. When People came to get him, he snarled and snapped. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good but should've been great
The writing style in this book is a wee bit too simplistic for my liking. Yeah, I realize it's a children's book but kids do appreciate descriptive, emotional writing just as much as us older folks. It's what hooks you. Despite that these true stories of once unwanted dogs who have beaten the odds and found loving homes are inspiring. A big black dog (the hardest to adopt...

They could not put him up for adoption. Right before they put him to sleep, while they were trying to get a leash on him, a woman asked if he would like to go for a walk. When he heard that word, he turned into an affectionate, loving pup. That was one example of the interesting stories in this book. With shelter dogs who become seizure alert dogs, actors, and family dogs, this is truly a great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed these touching/heart warming stories, March 23, 1999

I was very impressed by her stories of these amazing dogs. My daughter, Jessica, has a story in this book called "Danny". I read all the chapters and caught my emotions going from tearful to happy. She does a beautiful job writing the story. Am proud we are part of this. I believe these stories do show that shelter dogs do make wonderful pets!

A Kid's Review
Zorro,Tracker,Kirby,Joey,These are a few of the amazing dogs I read about in Peg Kehrets book called Shelter dogs . Amazing storys of adopted stays. This book will take your heart away when you read how these dogs survide there tragical lives. This story is about dogs that were given to the Humane Society because the owners cn't take good care of them.

I liked this book because it taught lessons on responsibility, trust, and courage. I would recommend this book to others because if you're a dog lover you'll like it. It teaches good lessons about being nice to animals. My favorite story was about a dog named Zorro. Zorro was a very big dog with a lot of energy. He had something called kennel cough. Zorro was a very loving and caring dog and thats what I liked.

Shelter Dogs

The book is about dogs getting adopted. The dogs did amazing things. One dog almost died but a word saved his life. One other dog was a champion that nobody wanted. Everyone should read this book because it is interesting, amazing, and has weird things.
You can relate to being rescued in shelter dogs. 2 people were deaf, had a fire, and the dog saved them. Every time before the person had a seizure the dog barked. A dog helped another dog that was blind. A dog was house trained to help someone.
You can relate to the characters in Shelter Dogs. The characters have problems. The dogs try helping the problems. There is one who helped with seizures. Most families were happy with their dog.
It takes you to different places in Shelter Dogs. In the Humane Society is where the dogs were. Some dogs were brought back here. In houses where dogs went when adopted. Some were adopted by Human Society.
Overall this book was a great book. I would rate it an 8. You can relate to the most of the dogs. I learned a lot from this book. I hope you will learn lots from this book too.

A Kid's Review
Shelter Dogs Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays, a voluminous, phenominal book provides you and exponentually heart-warming feeling. This awesome book holds eight incredible, fantastic narratives - each about a dog, its new family and a chalanging task they have to complete. Ivan, Joey, Zoro, and Kirby each have a differant implausible story. In Kirby's story something strange happens to his faithful owner. For three days he goes without food, water, and someone to take care of him. He becomes as scared as you could be if you were about to be gobbled up by a tyrannosurus-rex! What happened to his faithful owner?

A Kid's Review
If you like to read books about dogs, this book would be great for you! This book has eight stories about amazing dogs, who have gone to the animal shelter and have been adopted. One dog was kept in a locked house, because his owner had died in the hopsital and the dog was forgotten. Then someone found him and brought him to the shelter. The dog wouldn't let anyone touch him, open his kennel or do anything with him. One day a helper at the shelter, asked the dog "do you want to go for a walk?" - ever since then the dog has been nice to everyone. I'm sure that if you like to read about dogs, this book would be great for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays, June 15, 2003
By A Customer
Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays is the coolest book ever. I checked it out of my school library tons of times, and I read Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays about 5 or 6 times and it got better each time. This book is a really easy book to read, but it is really sad too. I know these are true stories, but if you would go to the humane society you probilty will not get as good of a dog as these people did, in the book so I think Peg Kehret should have put at least one dog in her book that was not as good. But it was still a great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Young and Old, April 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shelter Dogs: Amazing Stories of Adopted Strays (Paperback)
This book was purchased to be presented to the participants of the youth division (ages9-12) of competitors at our dog trials. The sponsor for the trials was a local dog rescue organization, so the book lent itself to the occasion.

Before giving them away, I had an opportunity to sit down and read it. The stories were interesting, well-written and were fine examples of how far we can go with a little love, compassion and care for others, be they people or dogs. As one of the young ladies I have talked to that received a copy of the book said, " Those stories were so great, that I now walk my dog without my mother having to tell me. And I even ask my pesty brother if he wants to go with us."

Highly recommend this book. Maybe if you are thinking about getting a dog, you'll think twice and give a "forever home" to a deserving animal at a rescue or shelter.
