5.0 out of 5 stars Shelter
Lisa Glatt will pull you into another world with this wonderful collection of poems. Glatt dares to juxtapose two subjects that are still taboo-sex and death. She weaves these together into a provocative portrayal of the obvious yet unspeakable relationship between two. I was so impressed and moved by this book that I bought copies for several friends.

2.0 out of 5 stars BLAND & PRETENTIOUS
What does contemporary American poetry have in common with pot-bellied pigs? Nothing! This is precisely what we find in this book of poems by Lisa Glatt. There is no tradition in her "voice" and nothing we haven't heard before. There is so much one can take when she is baraged with poems about sleeping with every freak in her neighborhood. What next? The...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, January 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Shelter (Paperback)
This book is about so many things: The beauty of ugliness; the vulnerability of being alive; the things we all crave and how we mourn when we lose them. It is a wonderful book that is not to be overlooked. I'm eagerly awaiting Glatt's next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous and Haunting Collection, July 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Shelter (Paperback)
The amazing thing about Lisa Glatt's SHELTER is the transformation it goes through from beginning to end. In the first section, Glatt's perspective on love is whimsical and cynical as she recounts past relationships with Mr. Wrongs. SHELTER takes a 180 degree turn in the second section, which is dedicated to the death of the poet's mother. Poems like "Eggplant Dreams" and "The Body is in Charge" are poignant without falling into the pitfalls of sentimentality. The collection ends with a meaningful relationship and new awareness of life, with all its horrors and gifts.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Original Voice, January 11, 2011
This review is from: Shelter (Paperback)
With her second book of poetry, published in 1999, Lisa Glatt has come a long way since Monsters and Other Lovers. The first book was one of release and admittance; in Shelter Glatt has a lesson for you, and the moral of the book is read and learn.

In every poem there is a message to be read and understood: in some cases it is a warning, in others a piece of info you can either accept or ignore.

Within these sixty pages is also a collection of "if you" poems: "If You Have Sex With a Married Man," "If You Have Sex With a Man Ten Years Your Junior," "If You Have Sex With a Graying Guy," and "If You Have Sex With a Stranger With One Ball."

Emotions are alive in this book - there is laughter, but there is also pain. While Shelter is not as dark as Glatt's first book, it is in no ways inferior, revealing her further talents as a poet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Distinct Voice From The Best Poet You've Never Heard Of., August 9, 2000
By
This review is from: Shelter (Paperback)
Lisa Glatt has the unique ability to blend into abrasive situations a sense of humor that challenges the reader not to fall into the conventional emotions that lend themselves in matters of love, death, adolescence and everything that falls between those moments. Glatt's poems allure you into a world forged together like the mother's cancer the collection chronicles: silently lethal and stunningly apparent.

Shelter is the rare book that gives you something new with every reading.

There is no tradition in her "voice" and nothing we haven't heard before. There is so much one can take when she is baraged with poems about sleeping with every freak in her neighborhood. What next? The elevator boy? The homeless ex-clown? The zoo keeper? This book indulges in depravity and is not fit for human ears. Not recommended at all!
