Praise for SHELTER ME:
"Col. Allen McDaniel was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq, and his family is devastated. Sgt. Mike Kowalski brings Allen’s dog, Trooper, back to the McDaniels and the precocious pooch sets about making things right, one person at a time. Sierra McDaniel helps her mother keep the ranch running and the family functioning while carrying a full course load at school. The last thing she wants is her dead father’s dog; neither does she want to remember the passionate moments from her brief affair with Mike. But the connection between the two is still strong, and they to resume their affair. Trooper’s asides expressing his thoughts, memories, and opinions about the family are some of the funniest moments in this romance. The story isn’t just about the love between Sierra and Mike—it also covers the love between mother and daughter, grandfather and granddaughter, dog and human, neighbor and neighbor, and even the army and its troops. There is indeed plenty of love to go around, and animal fans in particular will be swept away by it." --Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"A story about the redemptive power of love told with heart.  With Shelter Me Catherine Mann delivers another unforgettable romance." -Cindy Gerard, New York Times bestselling author.

It makes you laugh, cry and smile.

Maybe that it's told from a dog's point of view helps make the story more believable but it also gives it more character.

Catherine is very eloquent portraying the feelings of a family going through pain and loss and dealing with them.

From the very first line, Shelter Me drips with power. When a novel starts as explosive and captivating as "I was born in the land of Babylon," it is bound to be a solid read.

The prologue is told from the perspective of Trooper, a dog. While that may sound strange at first, it is the perfect voice for this story. Mann captures the quiet ways animals improve our lives, even in the aftershock of tragedy. Trooper's running commentary on events in the story add perspective that deepens the plot. When Trooper narrated, I could hear his voice in my head. It felt so natural. Shelter Me read like a movie for me (which, If we are going there--can this please be a movie!). When animals talk, Michael J Fox's voice--must have been all the times I watched Homeward Bound. At any rate, the story is an in-depth examination of relationships between people and between animals. The oscillation between human and animal perspective is a winning formula. Mann does an excellent job of balancing and maintaining multiple character voices. Truly admirable.

As an English major, I appreciated the touchdowns and allusions to other pieces of literature. Literature helps Sierra relate to her lived experience. She draws from WB Yeats for strength in the first chapter (and Yeats is simply my favorite 20th century poet). I immediately felt a strong connection to Sierra's way of engaging with reality. Her love of literature reminds me a bit of Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail. It's a beautiful touch, adding to the roundness of Sierra's character.

Mann's world building in Shelter Me is solid. The place and characters are vivid and tethered to reality. She allows her characters to struggle, to be completely human. I love when authors take the time to establish setting and characters.

Shelter Me will break your heart a thousand times, then put it back together in this emotional, engaging story. Catherine Mann doesn’t shy away of bringing a heavy dose of reality to this first Second Chance Ranch novel, and that makes Shelter Me stand out from the crowd.

Sierra and Mike are two people who clearly love one another, but who can’t seem to make their chosen life paths mesh. Still, when Sierra’s father is killed in action and Mike brings Trooper home to her to fulfill the colonel’s last request, neither Mike nor Sierra can resist one another. It’s easy to like Sierra and Mike – they’re smart, extremely hardworking people with generous hearts. Their love story is filled with minor ups and downs, and though satisfying, this is not where Shelter Me shines.

Shelter Me is at its strongest when it’s tugging on your heartstrings, and it’ll do so often. Ms. Mann skillfully blends heartbreak with hope and I truly appreciated that she managed to make me cry more than once but never overplayed any particular tragic element of the story. Though Sierra and Mike are ostensibly the center of Shelter Me, it’s the rest of the McDaniel family – those on two legs and four – who steal the show. Sierra’s mother Lacey is a military wife of incredible strength and compassion. But Lacey is running on fumes, trying to save as many animals as she can while coping with the loss of her husband and the dreams of their future together, as well as taking care of her Alzheimer’s-stricken father-in-law and a teenage son she can no longer reach. Each one of these things would be enough to flatten a person, but Lacey holds it together (sometimes by the skin of her teeth) with a determination I admired.

Staff Sergeant Mike Kolwalski only wants one thing when he gets home from Iraq, to sleep in a king sized bed with clean sheets! But before he does that he has to hand off his fallen commander's dog to his family without handing off his heart to Seirra.

Sierra McDaniel needs a break, a good long break! Her family life is crazy and when she's not mucking out the kennels, she's slogging her way through grad school. She certainly doesn't want yet another dog, especially because that reminds her of her father.

But most importantly she does not want to see Mr I'll charm you with just a smile , Mike again. Now I know you're thinking these two characters will see each other again, there will be a little but of uneasiness and the families and friends will help to get them to get together but this is not exactly the case, you see our hero of the moment in this book is the dog!

Trooper " I am just as brave as the best soldiers of all time" has a mission all of his own, and before long Mike is moving in to the ranch to lend a helping hand and hoping for his second chance with Sierra . But will Mike win Sierra's heart again or will Trooper's most important mission yet fail miserably?

I have read many books from this author before and each time am amazed more and more ! Her books are always full of life and filled with deep emotion that slowly tears your heart to shreds with sadness and then beautifully mends it back with such happiness there is just nothing more beautiful.

Shelter me was no different, I loved the characters in this book! I felt so deeply connected to them both it was as if they were right in front of me acting out their parts and so much more than just characters in a book.
