All Around Cheap Design,
By Daniel Winningham "BitterDan" (Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ShelterLogic 10x20 1-3/8" 8-Leg Canopy with Enclosure Kit (White) (Sports)
This product is a very poor design. First of all the poles are only 1 3/8" as opposed to the 2" found on comparable products. Additionally, the poles are split into section which doesn't seem like a bad idea except that they fit so snug that they are almost impossible to separate. This goes for every connection on the frame. It was incredibly difficult to get it disassembled and a couple poles I could not disassemble at all. Not only that but the canopy is also cheap. It fits very loose and there are gaps at every edge. The side panels do not fit right and in some spots I had to use two ball bungees to make it work. I guess that's why they include an extra box of bungees. I do not recommend this product. Don't even think about buying this for Burning Man. [...]

I was first concerned when I purchased the carport but wanted to cover my new car. I started it as soon as it arrived but had to go to work. I should have known better to do this first by myself second on a windy day. On Saturday when I awakened I watched with amazement seeing it being lifted up 2feet and slowly flipped! I rushed to home depot purchased anchors for the base and self tapper screws for the poles(just a safety precaution , new car)! Installed all srews and ancors- that should have been install anyway, then completed carport! It's great it withstood heavy winds on the worst days! I haven't had any heavy snow yet but I'm not worried! I tell everyone how great it is! The instructions state "disassemble during heavy winds") but I park my car in every night regardless of what the weather is!

The actual canopy is fine, it's fairly thick material (for the price) and has stood up to quite a bit of wind, rain, and even some snow.
The frame that comes with the canopy is a disaster. The tubes are made of very thin aluminum and two of them bent in the first decent wind storm after I set it up. The poles are all two-piece, and while it sometimes seemed impossible to get them apart if you're trying to move the canopy, the wind storm was able to pull over half of them apart. So between the bent pieces and the pulled-apart pieces, I have a canopy laying on the ground (luckily I didn't have a car inside at the time, just a couple mowers). Here's what I did to salvage the canopy. After reading this, you can decide if it's still worth it. I got some 1-1/4" schedule 40 PVC at the local hardware store and cut it to the lengths needed to cover each section of pipe with just the 2-1/2" sticking out of each end that goes in the connectors. I drilled holes in each end of the PVC and put in sheet-metal screws to keep the poles from pulling apart; I also drilled holes in the connectors so the poles wouldn't pull out of them. I put some rebar stakes in the ground for the poles to slip over and give some extra sideways support. The PVC gave the thin poles enough strength to stand up to the wind, and the canopy has been standing since I put it back up that way. If you want to spend another $75 or so on PVC and take the time to make all the cuts, the can be made into a usable structure. As it is, the frame is completely insufficient to the task. UPDATE: 26OCT10 The shelter, with my modifications, survived the "Chiclone" today, a couple hours of sustained 50+ mph winds. A couple grommets need to be replaced, but I'm satisfied with what this shelter can be made into.

INSTRUCTIONS SUCK!!!,
By
This review is from: ShelterLogic 10x20 1-3/8" 8-Leg Canopy with Enclosure Kit (White) (Sports)
I received this Garage in several boxes and while each tube was numbered, they were in different boxes, scattered, if you will....
Get ready for "instruction nightmare" .....the instructions were so vague and incomplete, that I had to figure out what went where, and that was no easy task! Some of the parts in the diagram were not even identified, causing frustration as to which one goes where. The bolts were not identified properly, causing me to use longer bolts when the short one is the right one....I only found this out AFTER I got through assembling the damn thing and found I needed the long bolts for the next step...then I had to disassemble my previous steps to get the longer bolts.... Also, I went through the steps installing all the framing, then when I went to cover the frame with the tarp, I found I had to disassemble the lower section of tubing to put it through the pole pockets....is this sounding fun now???? It to me 2 full days (one with anothers help) to put this damn thing together and I was one pissed off, frustrated dude at the end of it. Not a bad product per se, but be prepared to tear hair out figuring the assembly.

I'll make this really short. After a storm the support pipes falled. I thought no problem and called Shelter Logic. They refused to return my calls. I also e-mailed them 4 times and no reponse.
Make your own judgement but in my opinon this company refuses to deal with product probems. End of story.

good for the money,

This review is from: ShelterLogic 10x20 1-3/8" 8-Leg Canopy with Enclosure Kit (White) (Sports)
I bought this shelter 4 years ago and overall it held up decent. I say held up because it is no longer standing. The ground ancoring system was clearly not up for the job so I purchasedthe extra heavier duty screw type anchors. The first year it held up fine. The second year during very heavy winds a couple pipes detached and shifted it slightly. Also, the endwall grommets tore through in a couple spots. It lasted another year this way. Heavy snow and ice had deteriorated the canopy to where it now leaked in a few spots. The end wall finally gave up and the resulting high pressure from winds quickly took out the other endwall. Lasted about another 6 monthes like this then 50 mph winds tore it to shreds. Upon disassembly found that most of the bottom rails seperated and failed as well as a roof purlin weld.Given the low cost of this I think it is well worth the money. Dont let other reviews discourage you. If you purchase this, ancor it WELL and duct tape all the pipe connections, then the only weak link is the end walls. Tape up all the gromett ares well and you should be o.k. I'm going to reweld and straighten mine and make a greenhouse out of the frame.
