Ha Ha Green Day's not Dead (they're still awesome!),
By Michael Crane (Orland Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shenanigans (Audio CD)
If you really think about it, Green Day has been around for a long time. While other bands break up and so on, these guys still know how to put out great music. Some people have given them a hard time for sort of breaking away from their punk roots with the album, "Warning," but I still was able to see the punk side of them. Especially if you've ever seen them live. They have to be one of the best bands ever to see live."Schenanigans" is an outstanding album! It's not a CD of new songs, it's rare songs, B-Sides, cover songs, outtakes, and more. This CD takes me back to the "Dookie" era. There is nothing but punk on this album. There are some serious songs, but most of them are fast and upbeat. I really enjoy every song on the album. My favorite songs are, "suffocate," "you lied," "don't wanna fall in love," "scumbag," "sick of me," "do da da," and "ha ha you're dead." (Especially "ha ha your dead." An excellent finale to the album.) The only downside to the album is that it is very short. Though it is true that this is how Green Day has always been, it would've been nice to have it just a couple minutes longer. But, that does not take away the greatness from this CD. If you love Green Day, now or back then, "Schenanigans" is the CD for you. Great songs, great band, and just a great time. P.S. If you haven't seen these guys live yet, you don't know what you're missing. They are AWESOME live! See them live and see if you can still convince yourself that these guys have no talent.

And who says a "B-Sides" collection can't be a great album?,

When I heard Green Day was releasing a collection of B-Sides, Covers and Outtakes I must admit I had my doubts. I've seen it before and I'm sure I'll see it again, a band has a stockpile of songs that just weren't good enough for their other albums. But wait, here's an idea! Lets give them a quick remastering, throw them on album with some fancy packaging and sell them! This isn't the case with Green Day's "Shenangians", a collection of songs that come together so well. In fact, if I didn't know this was an all B-Sides release, I'd have to say this is one heck of a studio album.Several songs are outtakes from "Dookie" all the way to "Warning", it's hard to pick which came from which but that's really not important. The important thing is all songs are what Green Day has always had to offer, quality. Whether your moshing to "I want to be on T.V." or chuckling along to "Espionage" this album is sure to please any Green Day fan. Personally, I find my favorite tracks on the album to be "Desensitized" and "Ha Ha You're Dead", which sound like they were taken right off of "Insomniac", of course that's not why I like them, they're great songs in general. I don't think it's incredibly necessary to point out the instrumental work, but for the sake of boredom I will. The usual structured and well organized guitar, drum and bass work are all in place, so no need to worry. To sum it up quite simply if you like Green Day get this album. If you like rock get this album. If you like music...Ah forget it, just get the darn thing.

Great Green Day cd! I would rate it 4 and a half if I could. Almost five!
1. Suffocate - Great song, and great lyrics! This song's about a guy that's drunk, and he's tryig to "Get Off." 2. Desensitized - 2nd best on the whole cd! 3. You Lied - Catchy tune! After a while, it gets boring though. 4. Outsider - Cover of The Ramones. Green Day's version is way better! 5. Don't Wanna Fall in Love - Heart pounding, hed smashing song! Really fast. About a guy trying to not fall in love! 6. Espionage - It was in some spying movie... 7. I Want to be on T.V. - Only a minute long. Similar to "Take Back" from Nimrod. A five star song! Rock On! 8. Scumbag - Me and all of my friends love this song! My favorite off the whole cd! On ITunes I noticed they wrote S*****g. 9. Tired of Wiating For You - Cover by the Kinks. Shows the slower side of Green Day. 10. Sick of Me (or Sick) - 5 star song! 11. Rotting - Pretty twangy guitar! I would have made the words a little different... 12. Do Da Da - There's a long story on this song! While recording the "Insomniac" cd, Thsi was one of the B-Sides. The Songs "Stuck With Me" and this one were mixed up. This then became named a stupid name for a song, the present "Do Da Da." 13. On (off) the Wagon - Great song. 14. Ha Ha You're Dead - Awesome! Maybe I'll rate this cd 5 stars instead!!!

I am a new fan of Green Day. My bad, I don't know Time of your life is sung by GD, and i thought that song was awesome. So, I recently became GD fan after buying American Idiot, and then, impressed by AI, I went on to buy International Superhits to get the idea of what are these talented men are on about..and it was 60 mins of pure indulgence, for me.
I am so delightfully impressed. So I went the music store and got myself Shenanigans and not eating in school just to save up.. and it was all worth it. Have to say that Shenanigans is more punk than American Idiot, but that doesn't make any of them any better... I think both are ace, in their own ways. American idiot has more poignant lyrics and it has more meaningful songs in it, but Shenanigans is just fun to listen and to tap your fingers to. Track number 6, Espionage, stands out even though it has no singing in it, it's easily one of my fave tracks in this awesome compilation. This track is played in one of the Austin Powers movie, methinks. I love "I want to be on TV" because the boys are just being themselves...all carefree and fun and boisterous... it's just fun. And for some strange reasons, I dig "Tired of Waiting For You".. it has some dark feeling to it.. and it's just so beautiful to listen to it late at night. Of course, like everyone else, I LOVE "Haha you're dead". It's just so sickening fun, and I feel like laughing when I listen to the song..the boys are awesome.. I really like the old sound of GD, but I am glad they mature with age to produce such a good quality album like American Idiot. Get this alb! It's all worth it.

B-Sides don't get much better than this,

2001's "International Superhits" compiled Green Days greatest hit singles. 2002's "Shenanigans", it's companion piece, rounds up all off their best b-sides over the last 8 years or so. Usually b-sides are plagued with the thoughts of sub-par material. Take the semi-recent release of Pearl Jam's "Lost Dogs". That 2 disc set is an absolute gem in their discography, and holds up just as strong as any of their albums. Green Day is no exception. After Green Day's massive success of "Dookie", they consistently crafted quality albums, reviving punk rock as we know it today. There is quite the variety here, as you could guess; such as bits of surf rock, classic British Invasion, classic British punk, and sing-along pop. Nothing here is short of enjoyable.
Some standouts include "Suffocate," a cover of Joey Ramone's "Outsider," my personal favorite "Espionage," "I Want to Be on T.V.," a cover of The Kinks' "Tired of Waiting for You," and "Ha Ha You're Dead". This album will be most enjoyable to who it's marketed for; the fans. Although it's a great stamp in Green Day's alternate history, I probably would recommend it to a first time listener or purchaser. Nevertheless, Green Day fans will find it interesting to say the least.

The best Green Day cd!,

And thats saying something. Green Day has come a long way since they first released their "Sweet Children" E.P. Shenanigans is also Green Days most pop-punk record (with the exception of American Idiot)and one of their less obscene albums. Songs like, You Lied and Desentitized are among my favorites from this b sides compialation. A must have for any Green Day fans or fans of good music in general.

The best b-sides album ever,
This review is from: Shenanigans (Audio CD)
Pop-punk followers like Blink-182 may have eclipsed Green Day in the past few years, but the Bay Area trio's 2001 greatest hits collection, International Superhits, was an excellent reminder of how seductive this band can be when pumping out those Modern Rock radio gems. Shenanigans is the flip side of Superhits, collecting Green Day's b-sides and cover tunes into a compilation that jells. It kicks off smashingly, the boys cranking out "Suffocate", "Desensitized", and "You Lied" with all the energy and snottiness of their biggest hits. The covers of the Ramones ("Outsider") and the Kinks ("Tired of Waiting for You") are faithfully executed; but the next two ("Don't Wanna Fall in Love" and "Rotting") are uninspired filler; and the surf instrumental "Espionage," seems out of place amid the bubblegum punk and hardcore. That's not to say there isn't plenty of fist-pumping fun here, particularly for die hard fans; the fast and furious "I Want to be on TV" thrashes like the band's pre-Dookie performances on Berkeley's Gilman Street punk scene. "Sick of Me" and the previously unreleased "Ha Ha You're Dead" are both very solid anthems; "Ha Ha You're Dead" along with "Desensitized" are my two favorite tracks on this album. Even the shuffling "On the Wagon Again" is a surprising countryish charmer. This collection of odds and sods proves Green Day were every bit as passionate as their first generation punk heroes.

Shenanigans rocks!,

Green Day is by far the best punk/rock/ska band out there. They have been around for 13 years and they have never disappointed their fans with one of their albums. BJ(Billie Joe) writes excellent songs for the fans. Songs like "Ha Ha Youre Dead" keep us satisfied with Green Day. The whole album is just great! Green Day is practically spoiling the fans! I mean, they really dont wait long to release records! They are already in the studio recording another! Well, if you've never heard of Green Day and you wanna hear them, I guarentee that you'll love this cd. Their two covers "Outsider" by the Ramones and "Tired of Waiting" by the Kinks are great too!

i already knew 7 of the 14 tracks becuz i own a few of their imports, soundtracks and whatnot, but since i am a BIG friggin green day fan i HAD to pick it up. all the tracks r great. a GREAT cover of a ramones classic "outsider", u would think it was one of their own songs. "i want to be on t.v." has always been a fav. song of mine from green day. the collection also includes a cover of the kinks' "tired of waiting for you", and the last track is an unreleased song titled "ha ha you're dead" which is outstanding. lots of props to the green day cats and their fasinating music. BUY THIS ALBUM! every fan of green day should own it. and by the by, the artwork on this album is the best out of all of their albums. great great great! if you prefer their "dookie" area which wasnt too heavy or too soft, it'll definitly fit you well. but overall if u like green day at all u should purchase this!

Shenanigans collects b-side tracks from the albums DOOKIE through WARNING. If you didn't know any better, this could easily pass as an actual album. It's filled top to bottom with the catchy, high energy pop-punk that Green Day is known for.
The stand out tracks for me are: Desensitized, Do Da Da, Ha Ha Your Dead, Suffocate, Scumbag, You Lied, Tired of Waiting, Don't Wanna Fall In Love. The Song "Espionage" was recorded for the first Austin Powers soundtrack. My only complaint is that the songs "J.A.R.", "Maria" & "Poprocks & Coke" weren't on this. Buying INTERNATIONAL SUPERHITS! for 3 songs is kinda sucky. Tracks 9 & 13 = DOOKIE b-sides. Tracks 5,7 & 12 = INSOMNIAC b-sides. Tracks 1,2,3,6,10 & 11 = NIMROD b-sides. Tracks 4 & 8 = WARNING b-sides. Track 14 was previously unreleased. Cover songs: "Outsider" by The Ramones. "I Want To Be On T.V." by Fang. "Tired of Waiting for You" by The Kinks. |
