Hi, I recently bought this cube because I wanted to learn how to solve a 5x5. I have a QJ 4x4 and wanted to kick it up a notch. Unfortunately, I was not thrilled about getting this item based on what my 4x4 felt like. The 4x4 does not cut corners and it is very tight and slow, even after breaking it in and lubrication. When I got my cube in the mail, I opened the box and gave a first turn. To my pleasant surprise, it turns VERY well. It is super-slick and the corner cutting is amazing. I love this cube and it is so fun to solve. I really enjoy using it because I am very able to solve it at a fairly fast rate due to the slick, smooth turning and the amazing corner cutting. This is my first 5x5 and I would definitely recommend this cube to anyone who wants to learn or to someone who is looking for a nice speed cube. The quality of this cube is unmatched and I would pay up to $20 for this cube all week long. This is one GREAT deal for this sweet cube.

Pros: Small (6.5 cm) so it fits comfortably in your hand
The corner cutting is GREAT
All of the layers turn very quickly and smoothly
The stickers appear fairly durable and the colors complement each other well

Cons: Not sure where you would go to buy replacement stickers for this if you ever needed them (since it is a smaller version of a 5x5 and I am not sure if Cubesmith sells mini-5x5 stickers), but mine have held up really well so far
The springs do make a small bit of noise, but I don't mind it (and I am sure it would be a simple fix for anyone that it would bother

Hope this review was helpful! :D

First off, I am a "casual cuber"...not quite a speed cuber or a cube 'nut', but I care enough to solve my cubes frequently.

My first 5x5x5 cube was the Rubik's 'Professor' cube......what a disappointment. Not only was that cube literally painful to turn (seriously, every time I solved it, I could feel the carpal tunnel creeping into my wrists), but it locked and popped with every turn. My Rubik's 3x3x3 and 4x4x4 both loosened with use, and were also modifiable- so I suffered through solution after solution on my 5x5, hoping that it would get better. It didn't. Eventually, I decided to modify it, hoping that would make it workable...in trying to take it apart, the cube broke. The cube seemed to have been designed never to be taken apart- the pieces are all jammed together so tightly you can't pop the edges out, and the inner parts are so flimsily fragile that they break with minimum pressure.

Anyway, I decided that I needed a new cube; one that was all around better. After thoroughly researching, I came to the conclusion that I needed to get either a V-Cube 5x5 or a Shengshou 5x5......there seems to be a big dispute among speed cubers as to which is better (but the "faster" ones seemed to lean toward Shengshou). My final choice was the Shengshou based on the fact that it is 1/3 of the price of a V-cube, and apparently the same quality. I am so glad I got this cube.

Right out of the box, this cube surpassed every one of my expectations. When people say that it turns like butter, they mean that it turns like butter. I've had this cube in my hands for about an hour: it "finger trick's" easy, it hasn't locked up yet, it cuts corners well, pieces haven't popped out, etc.

Out of the box: Like my ShengShou 4x4 and 8x8 (I assume all ShengShou cubes), this cube comes dusty, very greasy, and there's bits of sand/dirt under the stickers.

I've nerver owned an expensive V-Cube and I never plan to buy one. I heard many people say that ShengShou are V-Cube knock-offs. I believe that ShengShou looks at what the V-Cubes do wrong and fixes those problems in their own ShengShou cubes. For example: a new V-Cube 6 constantly locks up and pops, but a ShengShou dosen't. After lots of modding and breaking into, the V-Cube does eventually end up preforming better than the ShengShou. But, still, ShengShou cubes are much cheaper.

I believe that the stickers are PVC (not so sure), but the quality itself is excellent! The stickers are a bit translucent so they appear darker on a black cube and more bright on a white cube (Trust me, its not an eye trick, they aren't 100% opaque.) The way they were applied is a totally different story. They aren't perfectly aligned so they start to peel right away, but if you cut of the folded part, it will be perfect. (An extra set of stickers were included with mine, but I had to ask.) There's also a grain or two of sand under a few stickers.

The mechanism is different compared to a Rubik's or Eastsheen. Pieces don't pop. The tensions are adjustable. The cube is a bit small compared to a Rubik's 5x5 (About 2.5 inches on each side). This cube can corner cut one cubie and does not reverse corner cut.

Summary:

Good:
High Quality Stickers
Corner Cuts
Adjustable tentions
Low Price
Extra Stickers

Bad:
Poorly placed stickers
Out of the Box: Dusty and greasy

In my own opinion, this is the best 5x5, even better then the V-Cube.
