From Library Journal
Typical of volumes in this series, DeRose's book provides an overview of Shepard's life and work. He analyzes Shepard's plays in light of his theatrical as well as thematic intentions, focusing on what he sees as the common ground uniting both of these elements: Shepard's "preoccupation with heightened or 'critical' states of consciousness manifesting themselves in the perception of the self and the world as unfixed." Supported by evidence gleaned from stage directions, visual imagery, and physical staging, DeRose's readings of Shepard's plays are balanced and perceptive. A good general introduction to Shepard and his work.
