A fresh twist on a beloved parable,
By
This review is from: The Shepherd and the 100 Sheep (Children) (Hardcover)
This book (originally published in Swedish) offers a new look at Jesus' parable of the lost sheep. While adding details that enable modern children to feel kinship with the sheep, it remains utterly true to the meaning and symbolism of the original Biblical parable. Thankfully there is no moralizing or attempt to "explain" the parable! Ideal as an extension for those using "Catechesis of the Good Shepherd" or "Godly Play," it is appealing and useful for parents and Christian educators of all denominations (I found my copy at a Greek Orthodox book store).

This review is from: The Shepherd and the 100 Sheep (Children) (Hardcover)
I love this book! It retells the biblical stories of the Good Shepherd and the Lost Sheep, presenting them in a way both entertaining and affecting. Children love looking at the wonderfully varied sheep and searching each page to find the naughty Little Wooly. Even the end papers present a cornucopia of images for children who enjoy the humor of anthropomorphic sheep and the challenge of a search. The illustratons give us an earthy, solid good shepherd and subtlely bring in liturgical and biblical references: the shepherd's torch (reminiscent of the pascal candle and biblical references to light), thorns, the trickle of blood on the shepherd's face after he has fought the wild beasts, and the huge celebration when the one that had been lost was found. Younger children will relate to the loving shepherd, the scariness of wild things, and the great party. Children who are old enough to be sensitive to moral issues will resonate with Little Wooly's stubborness and the shepherd's forgiveness. Practitioners of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Godly Play, as well as other curricula that use the shepherd stories will definitely want this book. I always keep extras on hand.
