In the sequel "The Calling of Dan Matthews," Dan Matthews becomes the new minister of the Midwestern town of Corinth. He battles his conscience about whether to be the spiritual puppet of the church elders or to prescribe a dose of heavy ministry to his ailing congregation. In the third novel, "God and the Groceryman," Wright makes a plea for God's presence in all aspects of life and offers a criticism of churches run as morally bankrupt businesses. This novel is a call for the modern church to return to spirituality.

About the Author

Harold Bell Wright was born in Rome, New York, in 1872, and died in La Jolla, California, in 1944. However, his spirit prevails in his writing. In addition to this trilogy, Pelican has published four of his novels: "That Printer of Udell's," "The Shepherd of the Hills," "The Calling of Dan Matthews," and "The Winning of Barbara Worth."

I have read several of Harold Bell Wright's books and have enjoyed them all. I liked The Calling of Dan Matthews , the second in this trilogy, so much that I read it to my family. Now we're almost through reading God and the Grocery Man together, and we have been inspired. Wright is one of those authors who just seems to hit the nail right on the head. We read his books and think, "Exactly!". It's like he communicates what we have been thinking about life and the church but haven't been able to articulate. I'd recommend this trilogy to anyone who is concerned about America and the church.
