5.0 out of 5 stars Pulling no punches
The most orthodox Roman Catholic bishop in the United States uses 400 pages to set the record straight on everything from the Trinity to the Sacraments to Natural Law. Written in a style that is both concise, complete, and accessible to everyone. A must read for any Catholic who wants to hear it straight. The good Bishop tells it like it is! God bless the Bishop of...

Thw author is the bishop of Lincoln ,nebraska, and has become famous[infamous] for his actions against"liberals".Supposedly a brilliant theologian{his humility must cause him to hide it VERY well],his writing is pedantic, heavy handed and simply boring. He comes off as a silly outtake from a failed saturday night live episode.A hero to catholic flat-earthers,he is...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, January 16, 2007

Bishop Bruskewitz is one of the most "traditional" bishops in America and his writing is a great inspiration. Completely faithful to the teachings of the Church but not at all dry, his book left me with a lot to think about. It's refreshing to see a bishop unafraid to go against the grain of the middlin' USCCB.

Fantastic!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank God For Bishop Bruskewitz!, August 23, 2003

This review is from: A Shepherd Speaks (Paperback)
"A Shepherd Speaks" is a must-read for all orthodox Catholics who wish to deepen their knowledge of the Faith. His Excellency writes well, is knowledgeable and informative, and is highly successful in provoking thought and in engendering spiritual fervor.

Although not quite in the same league as Archbishop Sheen, Bishop Bruskewitz shares many of his attributes -- and some of his failings. Both Archbishop Sheen and Bishop Bruskewitz are rather prone to redundancies and, by inevitable extension, in writing books that are somewhat longer than they need to be.

I should note that I was (albeit respectfully) somewhat taken aback by His Excellency's apparent enthusiasm for the Second Vatican Council, given that the Church's ghastly problems date back some 40 years -- i.e., to Vatican II.

A curiosity worth mentioning: On page 189, Bishop Bruskewitz attributes the saying "How odd of God to choose the Jews" to Chesterton. I had always thought that this little rhyme was one of Belloc's creations. Belloc, apparently, denied ownership, and we must take him at his word. But I have never before heard Chesterton's name mentioned as the father of this quotation. Anyway, as I said, just a curiosity.

Bottom line (and, yes, a redundancy): "A Shepherd Speaks" is a must-read.
