This review is from: The Shepherd's Castle (MacDonald / Phillips series) (Paperback)
The first George MacDonald book I ever read and it permanently hooked me! I couldn't put it down, and neither could my teen aged sons. All this plus it manages to teach wonderful values too! GREAT!

Grounded Gothic Story,
By Good Yarns "Tuckertribe" (CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Shepherd's Castle (Paperback)
This is a George MacDonald story written in the Gothic style. Yes, it has the moodiness, and mystery to the Gothic genre. Yes, the weather is practically a character, giving us clues about the plot. Yes, the characters are intriguing themselves, being revealed slowly throughout the story. Yes, it has all the best of the Gothic style....but so much more.
George MacDonald was C S Lewis's inspiration as an author, and a spiritual inspiration as well. It is on this level that the book works best of all. Without preaching, the main character reveals his faith to all the others in the story with such simple enthusiasm and obedience, the reader cannot but feel inspired by the God who inspired his faith and obedience. To those who know that God, his faith resonates. On both levels, this tale is a wonderful gift. |
