About the Author

Since his early years, J. Drew Brumbaugh has been pursuing two of his life’s passions, writing and martial arts. His published pieces include both fiction and non-fiction articles including short stories and two novels. A native Ohioan, Mr. Brumbaugh was born in Athens, Ohio. During his early childhood his family moved to northeast Ohio. As a young man, Mr. Brumbaugh spent time crewing on a Great Lakes iron ore boat, earning money to attend college. After graduation from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps. Following military service, he entered private industry and is now the Director of Quality for a local corporation. In his spare time Mr. Brumbaugh continues to write, concentrating on novels and is head instructor at the karate dojo that he, along with his wife and business partner, Carolyn Berg, own and operate. Currently Mr. Brumbaugh and Ms. Berg share their Mentor, Ohio home with an ever-changing flow of family, friends, students, goldfish and their dog, Blue.

More About the Author

I write suspense novels either with a science fiction or mainstream flavor. Unlike many authors who hit the reader between the eyes on page one, I like to introduce the characters, get the reader to know who they are reading about, learn to like or hate them and then tell the reader what happens to them. For me, if you don't care about the characters why would you care what happens to them?
Currently I have three novels available through Amazon, B&N, Apple as e-books or as paperbacks.
Shepherds is a near-future science fiction story that involves murder and romance in the midst of the Pacific Ocean.
War Party tells the story of three characters, one a Paiute Indian boy who saw the attack in a vision, all chasing the sleeper cell bent on killing as many people as possible and getting away with it.
Foxworth Terminus is my latest novel and is another science fiction thriller about a scientist who discovers a way to unlock awesome psychic powers that put assassins after him.
I also have a collection of supernatural shorts titled Ten More and co-authored a children's book, Girls Gone Great.
A sequel to War Party is in the works. The first sample draft chapters is free to download at http://jdrewbrumbaugh.com/future-projects/ and to get future chapters when they are available subscribe at my personal website www.jdrewbrumbaugh.com.
Here's wishing you good things to read no matter what you like to read.

I really enjoyed this book. The setting is the near future on the high seas. It's part sci-fi, part action-adventure, & part mystery. The story is immediately engaging and the suspense builds with each chapter. The characters are really cool and the visual images created by the author give the story a fantasy-like feel, even though it is a suspenseful thriller. It also has some adult themes mixed in, so probably not one you want to pass on to your pre-teen kids. I really liked the fact that the storyline is relevant and totally believable. Great read, two thumbs up!

This book is dripping with original characters, new plotlines and plausible future technology which made it a great read. SHEPHERDS has several elements you expect to find in a good novel, including vivid / likeable characters who are locked in an adventurous plot that takes place in an original setting with cool, new technology. I'd go as far as to call SHEPHERDS fantastic for two reasons. First, it takes place out on, and below, the open ocean, which gives it a fresh and brisk feeling throughout. Second, the author incorporates radical new technology, both genetic and nautical, that has just enough science to make it plausible but never gets bogged down. The deep-sea cowgirls in this tale are sort of sexy. I've read a lot of nautical literature, and just want to say that this is not your grandfather's sea story. This is a cutting edge, fast-paced, science-based yet fun and adventurous tale set in a future where corporations and pirates and tuna herd shepherds fight for a living on, and below, the waves.

This book took me by surprise from the first page and didn't let go. I read it in one day as I couldn't put it down. The premise is wonderful, inventive, and a surprise with dolphins and "shepherds" (humans genetically engineered to operate in the ocean). The author's ability to rivet the tension and keep it going while building loving relationships and some horrific situations was masterful. The only downside was that it isn't a series and I didn't want it to end. Made me want to transform!

An interesting look at a future world. The book was a little bit difficult to get into at first, however the more you read, the more interesting the story line becomes. The idea of people learning to understand dolphins and to communicate with dolphins is an interesting twist, who knows, this may be a wish come true some day. Sci-fi+action+romance all in one, has good chances for a movie. Hope to see more from this author

-I don't know, but I had difficulty getting into it at first, I can't seem to get into the story. I found the first chapters quite dragging. But it does pick up as I went on. And in spite of the struggle I had at first, I can't deny that the story has a great plot and very original. I can't say it's bad, but my experience wasn't enough to give it a higher rating than 2 stars.

J. Brumbaugh keeps coming out with new stories that have interesting characters that you can enjoy, with plots that aren't just cookie cutter with so many other stories coming out. I definitely enjoyed this one (well, I haven't read one yet by him that I haven't liked), and have made a point to watch for new books by him. I especially loved the dolphins in this!

This futuristic sci-fi action thriller was full of unexpected characters and far out technology. The characters were sailors and cowboys and criminals but they were all out on the high seas on ships and boats. It was very unexpected. I liked it
