This tense adaptation of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story draws upon facts related to the one-time, secret Italian terrorist organization "the Red Circle." Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke) are enlisted by a friend of their landlady and housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson (Rosalie Williams). That friend, Mrs. Warren (Betty Marsden), has a mysterious lodger who will not show herself and whose husband is a man being sought by some shady group that mistakenly abducted Mr. Warren. The sequestered lodger, Emilia Lucca (Sophia Diaz), tells Holmes of her ties to the Red Circle and of her efforts, along with those of her missing husband, to break free of the Circle's long arm of revenge. The episode brings Holmes face to face with a Pinkerton detective (Kerry Shale) from America, with whom he shares a mutual admiration. The excitement builds to a fierce climax that makes this yet another memorable episode in the Granada Television series about Doyle's famous sleuth. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mysterious Man, a Red Circle, and...Murder!!!, March 21, 2005
This review is from: Sherlock Holmes: Red Circle [VHS] (VHS Tape)
+++++

This movie is based on the story "The Adventure of the Red Circle" (1911) written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 to 1930).

Mrs. Warren (Betty Marsden), a friend of Mrs. Hudson (Rosalie Williams), consults with Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) on a rather strange matter. Mrs. Warren becomes alarmed when her mysterious new "lodger" or tenant never emerges from his room, communicating with her only through printed notes passed in and out with his meals.

Mrs. Warren describes this tenant as follows: "under thirty, very dark, middle height, clean shaven, has an [Italian] accent, [and] no name." Sherlock takes little interest in the case (even after Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke) asks him to seriously consider it) until a murder occurs with the prime clue being a red circle dabbed on the wall. The red circle turns out to be the calling card of a secretive, Italian organization.

With the help of a Pinkerton detective (Kerry Shale), Holmes deduces a connection between Mrs. Warren's mysterious man and the "Brotherhood of the Red Circle."

I liked Sherlock's little statement at the end of the movie: "The law is what we live with...justice is sometimes harder to achieve."

Brett (as usual) does a good job in capturing the essence of the famous gumshoe in his performance.

Finally, the props, costumes, and background music are well done.

In conclusion, this is a good movie to watch even if you have read the story it's based on!!

(1994; 50 min; British drama; made for TV; full screen; color)
