A compilation of a novella (previously published), some short stories, and vignettes, Sherlock Holmes and the Lyme Regis Horror is an enjoyable pastiche with something for nearly every Sherlockian. In the title novella, Ruffle takes on a now-venerable match-up, Sherlock Holmes vs. (ok, I won't give it away), and makes it his own. "Horror" is atmospheric, tense, occasionally sweet, and takes the reader and the boys from Baker Street to the darker edge of existence. "The Trumper Affair" is a very Doylean outing, featuring lots of accurate historical detail. Other stories involve the supernatural, the Holmes-Watson friendship, and...snowmen? My personal favorite is "Christmas With Holmes," but I defy anyone not to be touched by "Henrietta's Problem." Throughout the book, Ruffle handles the Sherlockian world respectfully, and with attention to canon. Holmes and Watson are never out of character, and their banter is superb. I look forward to reading more from this author!
