Editorial Reviews

Review

David Ruffle has taken on the challenge of writing a short novel in the style of Dr Watson, and all in all he does pretty well. The development isn't identical, and the characters have different names, but if I mention a bloodless corpse, hypnotic seduction, and a nocturnal Transylvanian nobleman you'll get the idea. Mr Ruffle paints a vivid picture of Lyme and its harbour. The characters are distinct individuals: the charming landlady, the insufferable police inspector, Watson's friend the local doctor, and all the others. And the plot is undeniably exciting! Six short stories, varying in length and mood, complete the book. - Sherlock Holmes Society of London

Excellent read! December 2, 2011
Format:Paperback
The first edition of the Lyme Regis Horror had me wanting to read more works by David Ruffle and so we now have the expanded second edition. Bravo! The novella remains as 'biting' as ever, filled with eerie suspense, a little romance, and, the essence of Lyme Regis. The short stories vary to everyone's taste. The 'Runes Affair' follows the 'Horror' in venturing into the supernatural, but, 'The Trumper Affair' takes us to Victorian Brighton for a rousing cricket match based on real persona and cricket history.'A Christmas Tale' is written in the true spirit of the Holiday, just as sweet and warm as Christmas pudding. The style remains throughout true to Doyle and the period. In other words, I thoroughly enjoyed this work.

By Leah G
Format:Paperback
A compilation of a novella (previously published), some short stories, and vignettes, Sherlock Holmes and the Lyme Regis Horror is an enjoyable pastiche with something for nearly every Sherlockian. In the title novella, Ruffle takes on a now-venerable match-up, Sherlock Holmes vs. (ok, I won't give it away), and makes it his own. "Horror" is atmospheric, tense, occasionally sweet, and takes the reader and the boys from Baker Street to the darker edge of existence. "The Trumper Affair" is a very Doylean outing, featuring lots of accurate historical detail. Other stories involve the supernatural, the Holmes-Watson friendship, and...snowmen? My personal favorite is "Christmas With Holmes," but I defy anyone not to be touched by "Henrietta's Problem." Throughout the book, Ruffle handles the Sherlockian world respectfully, and with attention to canon. Holmes and Watson are never out of character, and their banter is superb. I look forward to reading more from this author!

Exciting December 1, 2011
Format:Paperback
The combination of a beautiful English seaside town and an unimaginable horror is the situation that greets Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson when they make a visit to Lyme Regis. The friendship between these two men is portrayed believably and well. This Holmes and Watson are rooted in the world delineated by Conan Doyle. Watson in particular is once more shown to be the loyal friend he undoubtedly was. I believe all Sherlockians or Holmesians will find much to enjoy here and will be keen to add it to their collection.
