3.0 out of 5 stars It could be worse February 17, 2012

It's often hard to know what to make of the reviews of games like this. There are people who hate anything that isn't an action shooter so reading the reviews is like solving a mystery, are the bad reviews from people who hate the game because it's bad or are they people who would hate any point and click puzzle solver, i.e. they hate the genre? So I'll start by saying I really wanted to like this game, I like the Sherlock Holmes books, I like puzzles, I wish they would make more of these type games for consoles. Still the game was a disappointment and although I enjoyed some of the puzzles I was glad when it was finished.

In the opening scene Holmes is smoking cigarettes with yellow filter tips. It should be common sense that filtered cigarettes have no place in the 1880's. That doesn't inspire confidence in the people who came up with the puzzles, perhaps it was intentionally put in as a clue that this game was badly designed. More inaccuracies follow and while I'm not one to nitpick such things this sloppiness is relevant because it also manifests itself in the design of the puzzles.

Voice acting is another thing I normally don't care about but the voice and accent of Holmes in this game is identical to that of Stewie, the baby from the cartoon Family Guy.

At times the dialogue in the subtitles has mistakes or differs slightly from what is said by the character. More sloppiness.

In some of the puzzles elements are small and poorly rendered. I've got a 42 inch plasma set and had to get up for a closer look a few times. Good luck with a small tube set. There was no reason for this other then sloppy design.

Up until now all my complaints have been minor but here is the serious problem with the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good game. August 10, 2011

I love a good puzzle/action adventure game and I found this game to be a lot better than I thought it would be. I like puzzle games like portal(action and puzzle). This game didn't really have any interactive action or fighting but I still found myself sucked in to the story from start to finish. The story is fun, the characters are cool and some of the puzzles are a real challenge. It gets hard, but not soo hard that you give up. If you like a good "Who done it?" story in a game, you'll most likely love this. Well worth the price and I'll play it again for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best suspense detective game January 19, 2011
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
for one i loved the feel of the game. sure you didn't get to drive a car, and sure you really can't interact with people unless they are part of your objective but its still fun. I think its funny and serious at the same time. This game does offer you to learn alittle about who jack the ripper was. Though noone was caught in the actual murders you learn that he was after a certain type of female. This game is great for anyone who wants a challenge from games like csi which are pretty much straight forward. I give it two thumbs up. Only buy it if you want a challenge because it can be hard. But i thought it was worth it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed November 20, 2011

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I love Sherlock Holmes, but I do not like the voice chosen to portray him. Neither do I care for the script. There is a lot the character says that I seriously doubt Holmes would say. Holmes never was much of a talker, as Watson has pointed out in many adventures.

I also find the camera angles weird to control. I have spent way too much time trying to figure out what the heck i am missing so I can continue to the next piece of the game. But there is no indication as to what I need to do. I also find it frustrating that to get one clue, I have to do 20 favors for people (one leads to another, in order to get another, to get another, and so on...).

There a lot of glitches in the rendering too that makes it distracting and feels like it wasn't quite finished/complete before they produced it.

Overall, I am disappointed in the game. It's more frustrating than exciting. I feel obligated to finish it so I can move on to a new game.

On the plus side, I rather enjoyed the lock combination on the briefcase. That part was fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging, clever - a great mystery game September 13, 2013
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is not for those who just want to smash things. It is, like Sherlock Holmes, a game of deductions and investigations. It's true, Sherlock Holmes does not magically morph into an action hero, and cars are not transported to 1880s London for your pleasure, nor are there out-and-out gunfights, but yet this game fails to disappoint all the same. An intricately created world with a rich set of characters.

If you don't like the genre, don't buy the game! If you do, this will provide for quite a lot of enjoyment. I would, however, not play it with younger children, due to the whole prostitute-murdering aspect.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining PC-style game for Xbox August 23, 2011

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This game is interesting and entertaining, but with a guide I completed it in less than 24 hours. It would be easy to drag it out as some of the puzzles are pretty hard to figure out, and can be frustrating without outside help. Sherlock's investigative process is very data-driven, and you need to create timelines and deduction boards using the data you've collected.

Using a guide, I was able to complete the game and get all achievements in a day. This game is an easy 100% completion game for 1000G, but the storyline is probably more interesting than the game itself.
